SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival Closing Night Feature: ALL SKATE
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026.\nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “All Skate”!\nALL SKATE is the full history of roller rinks and roller skating as told by a diverse group of people who are currently involved with roller skating and rinks\, and through my point of view having grown up in a roller rink built by my grandfather. \nWe cover everything from the early inline skating inventions\, the patented Plimpton four-wheel design which prevailed\, and then go though multiple phases of popularity including 1920s skaters including vaudeville performers and silent films\, professional roller sports\, the Skating Vanities\, the 40s/50s during and post WWII when we expanded to over 5000 mostly family-owned roller rinks in the US\, to the huge 1970s roller disco era\, the return of roller blades in the 80s. \nWe also visit the times of decline over the years\, especially since the 2000s\, and the reasons many rinks couldn’t survive\, visiting many former roller rinks to see what the buildings hold today\, including retail stores\, homeless shelters\, and a sad return to my family’s rink which is now an indoor shooting range. But we end on a high note\, with the amazing roller skating resurgence brought on by Covid\, including skating in the Super Bowl for the first time ever in 2024. \nDocumentary • USA • 2026 • 102 Minutes\nDirector: April Wright\nWriter: April Wright\nProducer: April Wright\nEditor: April Wright\nCinematographers: Joe Farris\, Dustin Perlman\, Bryan Sarkinen\, JT Seaton\, April Wright\nArchivist: Ronda Nissen\nSubjects: Park Roller Rink (Zion\, IL)\, Myesha McCaskill “The Skate Guru of Chicago\,” Jim Turner (Co-Founder National Museum of Roller Skating) at Butler Skateland (Racine\, WI)\, Guptill’s Arena (Albany\, NY – Guinness Book World’s Largest)\, Roller Wave in Brooklyn NY\, Moonlight Rollerway (Glendale\, CA)\, Oaks Park Rink (Portland\, OR – open since 1906)

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival: Nuisance Bear
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026. \nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be one of the screening venues for “Nuisance Bear”!\nFrom the Sundance Film Festival program: \nA polar bear is forced to navigate a human world of tourists\, wildlife officers\, and hunters as its ancient migration collides with modern life. When a sacred predator is branded a nuisance\, it becomes unclear who truly belongs in this shared landscape. \nFilmmakers Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman return to Churchill\, Manitoba — affectionately known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” — to deepen the inquiry begun in their award-winning short film. The result is a striking portrait of the fraught coexistence between polar bears and humans\, guided by an Inuit narrator whose insights resist simplification. \nThe film traces this relationship with nuance\, revealing how these arctic creatures deal with being constantly monitored\, photographed\, and redirected. There is a thrill in watching a polar bear outwit human efforts to contain it\, underscoring the bears’ resilience and the fragility of the systems that attempt to control them. \nBy challenging the conventions of a nature documentary and favoring confrontation over moralism\, Nuisance Bear invites us to reconsider our assumptions about wildlife as spectacle. \nDocumentary • USA • 2026 • 90 Minutes\nDirectors: Gabriela Osio Vanden & Jack Weisman\nProducers: Michael Code\, Will N. SUMMARY:HAUNTED MANSION
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Gracey Manor\nGabbie (Rosario Dawson)\, a widowed doctor\, is ready for a new chapter. After losing her husband\, she leaves the busy streets of New York behind. With her young son\, Travis\, she heads to New Orleans in search of a fresh start. Their new home is Gracey Manor\, a sprawling old mansion with crumbling walls and plenty of character. Gabbie imagines transforming it into a charming bed and breakfast. At first\, it feels like a dream. But soon\, the dream twists into something far darker. \nStrange noises echo through the halls. Shadows move where no one should be. Doors slam on their own. Gabbie and Travis realize quickly that the house is not only dilapidated – it is haunted. And not by just one ghost. Spirits fill every room. Some are playful. Others are menacing. All of them make life inside the manor nearly impossible. \nDesperate for help\, Gabbie seeks out experts in the paranormal. She gathers an unlikely team. A priest\, a psychic\, a historian\, and a ghost tour guide step into the mansion\, each bringing their own skills. Together\, they face the mysteries inside Gracey Manor. Yet the deeper they look\, the more dangerous the secrets become. \nHatbox Ghost\nAt the center of the haunting stands the Hatbox Ghost\, portrayed through motion capture and voice by Jared Leto. Long ago\, Gracey’s grief led him down a path of obsession and rituals. Now\, those choices threaten to bind both the living and the dead in eternal darkness. \nThe group must uncover the truth\, fight back against the Hatbox Ghost\, and free the manor before it consumes them all. Gracey Manor is more than a house – it is a trap. And only courage\, unity\, and quick thinking can break its hold. \nJoin us for this fun-filled story of scares and excitement! \nDirector: Justin Simien\nWriter: Katie Dippold\nStars: LaKeith Stanfield\, Rosario Dawson\, Owen Wilson

SUMMARY:PSYCHO
DESCRIPTION:A secretary on the run makes a fatal stop at a lonely motel\nMarion Crane (Janet Leigh) is tired of her ordinary life in Phoenix. She longs to marry her boyfriend\, Sam Loomis (John Gavin)\, but money stands in the way. One Friday afternoon\, temptation wins. Marion steals $40\,000 from her employer and hits the road. Her plan is simple: reach Sam\, pay off his debts\, and start fresh. \nBut the journey takes a dark turn. As night falls\, heavy rain pounds the highway. Marion grows anxious\, nervous about the police\, and desperate for rest. She pulls off onto a deserted back road. There\, a flickering neon sign appears through the storm: Bates Motel. \nThe motel looks worn and forgotten. Its owner\, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins)\, steps out to greet her. He’s shy\, polite\, even boyish. He offers Marion a meal and friendly conversation. Yet something about him feels off. Norman speaks often of his mother\, who lives in the looming house on the hill. His tone shifts from tender to bitter. His smile hides unease. \nOver dinner\, Marion rethinks her choices. She decides to return the money and face the consequences. But she never gets the chance. In the dead of night\, the bathroom curtain rips open\, and Marion’s story ends in a shocking burst of violence. \nFrom here\, the story shifts. A suspicious sister\, a determined boyfriend\, and a curious private detective come looking for answers. Their search circles back to Norman and the suffocating shadow of his mother. \nAlfred Hitchcock directs Psycho with relentless tension. Quick cuts\, stark shadows\, and Bernard Herrmann’s piercing score pull viewers into a world where safety unravels in seconds. Every scene builds dread. Every revelation twists deeper. And the final truth about Norman Bates delivers one of cinema’s most unforgettable shocks. \nWriters: Joseph Stefano\, Robert Bloch\nStars: Anthony Perkins\, Janet Leigh\, Vera Miles

SUMMARY:WICKED
DESCRIPTION:Before Dorothy ever lands in Oz\, another story unfolds. The story of Wicked. \nElphaba is smart\, fiery\, and different. Born with green skin\, she grows up mocked and misunderstood. Yet she carries a gift she doesn’t fully understand—power unlike anything seen in Oz. Glinda\, by contrast\, shines in every room. She’s blonde\, charming\, and adored. But behind her glittering smile lies a young woman still searching for purpose. \nTheir worlds collide at Shiz University. At first\, they clash. Glinda thrives on popularity\, while Elphaba prefers to stay in the shadows. But circumstances force them together. Over time\, rivalry turns into respect. Respect grows into friendship. Against all odds\, they become inseparable. \nThen comes the turning point. A meeting with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz promises hope but hides betrayal. Elphaba sees corruption and cruelty. She refuses to stay silent. Glinda\, torn between loyalty and ambition\, chooses a different path. \nFrom that moment\, the friends walk divergent roads. Elphaba embraces her power\, defying the system and the lies of Oz. To the people\, she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda\, meanwhile\, learns compassion. She rises as Glinda the Good\, a beacon of light. \nTheir bond remains at the center. Love and heartbreak\, choices and consequences\, twist their fates together even as the world drives them apart. \nWith sweeping songs\, dazzling spectacle\, and deep emotion\, Wicked reimagines the land of Oz. It asks what makes someone “wicked” and what makes someone “good.” And it reveals how even the strongest friendships can change destinies. \nDirector: Jon M. Chu\nWriters: Winnie Holzman\, Dana Fox\, Gregory Maguire\nStars: Cynthia Erivo\, Ariana Grande\, Jeff Goldblum

SUMMARY:Hereditary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of Hereditary\, the breakout debut from writer-director Ari Aster\, at the Gorton Center. Known for its haunting visuals and deeply unsettling atmosphere\, this modern horror classic explores the dark side of family legacy and the terrifying weight of inheritance. \nWhen Ellen\, the matriarch of the Graham family\, dies\, her daughter’s family struggles to move forward. First\, grief weighs heavily on them. Yet\, as the days pass\, strange events begin to surface. Secrets once buried start to rise. And soon\, every discovery pulls them deeper into darkness. \nThe family unravels one mystery after another. However\, with each answer comes an even more frightening question. Their ancestry hides more than traditions. It hides a sinister inheritance. And this inheritance refuses to be ignored. As the truth emerges\, fear takes over. What begins as mourning quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival. \nStep by step\, their sense of normalcy collapses. First\, they lose trust in what they see. Then\, they lose faith in each other. Finally\, they lose the safety of their own home. No place feels secure. No moment feels calm. And no bond proves strong enough to withstand the terror pressing in from every side. \nThrough stunning imagery and haunting detail\, Aster redefines what a horror film can be. He pushes the genre into chilling new terrain. At the same time\, he offers a portrait of heritage twisted into something terrifying. The result is more than a movie; it is an experience. It is a warning. And\, most of all\, it is a shattering reminder that sometimes the most frightening monsters are the ones we inherit.

SUMMARY:Mountainfilm on Tour 2025: Indomitable Spirit Medley
DESCRIPTION:Gorton Center and Lake Forest Open Lands present… Indomitable Spirit Medley!\nSocial impact and exciting stories that include hiking\, climbing\, running\, all in one program! This collection of short films tells stories of those who did not give up\, back down\, or let their challenges define them. Come enjoy an eclectic film program right here in our John and Nancy Hughes Theater! \nIndomitable Spirit Medley films: \nThe Last Observers \nLennart Karlsson and Karin Persson have recorded weather measurements every three hours — temperature\, air pressure\, wind\, wave height and cloud types — at a lighthouse on the southwestern coast of Sweden for 36 years. The dedicated couple have amassed over 100\,000 observations and seen rapid changes in recent years as migratory birds arrive earlier in the spring\, and heavy rains and drought become more frequent. Theirs is the last remaining manual weather station in the country and it too will soon become automated. In The Last Observers\, the pair reflect on their simple yet joyful life where they find true happiness through symbiosis with nature.\nSweden/ Duration: 24 min\nDirected by: Maja Karlsson \nNever  too Old \nAt one time Libby James held more running records than Flo-Jo and Usain Bolt combined\, yet most likely you have never heard of her. She is considered the grandmother of women’s competitive running despite not having started running until she was 35. Currently\, she holds six American records and in 2012 was the highest point-graded runner in the world. Libby is proof that you can be almost famous — and still happily lead a fulfilling life. \nUSA/ Duration: 5 min\nDirected by: Patty Jen Arndt & Stash Wislocki \nAscend   \n \n\n\n\n\nThis documentary follows the inspiring story of a group of young women from Afghanistan who pursued their passion for climbing and mountaineering despite facing grave risks. But when the Taliban seized power\, they were forced to flee their homes and start anew in the United States. Members of the Yosemite Search & Rescue team learned about the women’s plight and invited them to spend a week in Yosemite\, where they could safely reunite and find solace in the climbing community. Through this heartwarming tale\, viewers witness the strength and resilience of these young women as they adapt to life in a new country and forge new friendships with fellow climbers. \n\n\n\n\nUSA/ Duration: 20 min\nDirected by: Kathryn Francis\, Campbell Brewer \nNear the River \nIn the tourist town of Livingstone\, Zambia\, a group of local men who make their living portering kayaks aspire to become safety kayakers on the Zambezi River. However\, the proposed Batoka Gorge Hydroelectric Scheme threatens to flood the famous rapids of the Zambezi and eliminate river-related jobs. \nUSA/ Duration: 11 min\nDirected by: Darby A. McAdams \nWild Hogs and Saffron \nIranian-American filmmaker Andy Sarjahani and his unlikely childhood friend Bubba Samuels go on a wild hog hunt in their native Ozarks where unexpected conversations unfold that have a lasting impact on their friendship. Growing up\, Sarjahani rejected his father’s Iranian culture to fit in. Now\, by sharing that culture\, he uses connection to dismantle hateful stereotypes about the people of both Iran and Arkansas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n*HEAVY EXPLICIT LANGUAGE\, DRINKING\, AND GRAPHIC IMAGERY \n\n\n\n\nUSA/ Duration: 19 min\nDirected by: Andy Sarjahani \n\n\nTo Scale: Time \nOn a dry lakebed in California\, a group of friends attempt to build a scale model of time: a true illustration of cosmic evolution and our place within it. Over miles\, they lay out tiny lights representing important moments in the history of the universe: the Big Bang\, the meteor that killed the dinosaurs and the beginning of human civilization. The result is time represented by distance and the recognition that although we are alive for the briefest moment — in this demonstration\, the width of a hair — our lives are a gift from the universe that we must spend wisely. \nUSA/ Duration: 10 min\nDirected by: Alex Gorosh \nPlanetwalker \nIn 1971\, John Francis (Mountainfilm 2008) witnessed an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. The sight of oiled birds on the shoreline caused him to give up motorized transport and speaking\, convinced that listening was the way forward. He spent the next 17 silent years earning the name Planetwalker. Over the many miles\, his idea of environmentalism was changed by the people he met\, talked to and broke bread with. At 77 years old\, Francis now both talks and rides in cars. A Symphony of Tiny Lights recounts much of his interior journey and explores the weblike and sometimes deeply personal consequences of his decades of pilgrimage. \nUSA/ Duration: 31 min\nDirected by: Dominic Gill & Nadia Gill

This heartwarming representation of true good character and selflessness is a much-needed reminder that good people do exist. This film encourages us to step away from our own selfish tendencies and embrace others so we can realize that even the smallest things can bring joy to their day. We follow the journey of Dr. Weaver and Dr. Fritts as they conduct cutting-edge research throughout rural Texas\, where wind turbines pose a new threat to bat populations. Bats save billions of dollars in agriculture costs by consuming insects that feed on crops. But the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in deepened public stigma toward these winged mammals. Through their research efforts\, quirky friendship and shared bat obsession\, Batsies is a fresh take on saving a creature that’s considered the ultimate outcast. \nUSA/ Duration: 15 min\nDirected by: Elizabeth Unger \nJojo – A Toad Musical \n \nJojo is a kid who lives in the city and loves nature\, especially toads. He also loves music and writing rap songs. Jojo combines his love of nature and love of music to write fun environmental rap songs about how we need to protect nature. He shares a good tip at the end\, so wait for it. \nUSA/ Duration: 8 min\nDirected by: Chelsea Jolly & David Herasimtschuk \nHigh Road \nHigh Road celebrates the unbreakable bond between Paralympian Meg Fisher and Jack Berry\, a young Para athlete whose cycling career is just beginning to unfold. They are regenerative farmers surrounded by corn and soybeans for miles. The Petersons’ farm is a sign of diversity and healthy crops. To others they might seem crazy\, but the Petersons think of regenerative farming and food as a beacon of hope for a healthier farming system\, showcasing that soil health can lead to healthier foods and happier farmers. \nUSA/ Duration: 6 min\nDirected by: Kirk Horton & Brendan Davis \nPaddle Tribal Waters \n \nPaddle Tribal Waters is a positive way to celebrate the removal of the Klamath dams and support the tribal nations by ensuring their youth have a say in the dam removal. SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival - Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Come see a special screening as part of the Lake County Film Festival at the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Center! \nELLIS is the first feature-length documentary about Ellis Marsalis Jr. and the Marsalis Music Family\, often called the First Family of Jazz. \nThe film chronicles the life of this exceptional New Orleans composer\, performer\, and educator\, the profound influence that the city had on him — and that he had on the jazz that came out of New Orleans. It is also a story of how one man transcended racial injustices he faced from his birth during segregation to his death from COVID 19. \nMade with the full cooperation of Ellis\, his family and everyone around him\, ELLIS is told from an insider perspective with never-before-seen footage. For three years until his passing in April 2020\, I worked closely with Ellis Marsalis on this film about his life. He tells it in his own words and he guides us through the events of his life in his own way: With his music. We filmed Ellis’ last concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York and Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro in New Orleans\, and a solo concert at the Marsalis Center for Music performed exclusively for the film. \nThese concerts are interlaced with verité scenes that place Ellis in his city and with interviews with his sons Wynton\, Branford\, Delfeayo\, Ellis III.\, and Jason\, and colleagues\, and disciples. Archival footage and photos take us back to New Orleans of the early twentieth century\, to California of the fifties where Ellis served in the Marines and played with modernist giant Ornette Coleman\, to New York of the seventies where he toured\, and to his classrooms throughout the years. \nThe result is more than a biography of one of jazz’s heroes. The film interweaves Ellis’ accomplishments with key threads of American cultural history\, placing him in historical context as someone who was both deeply affected the by world around him\, and who\, by responding to it helped to shape that world.
