SUMMARY:RENTAL EVENT: "Boycott" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Screening of Boycott Presented by Lake Forest College\nA screening of Just Vision’s latest documentary\, Boycott\, with Lake Forest College followed by a discussion with Suhad Babaa\, Just Vision’s President and Executive Director and the film’s Producer\, and Brian Hauss\, staff attorney at the ACLU Speech\, Privacy\, and Technology Project and Boycott protagonist. \nBoycott follows the stories of a news publisher in Arkansas\, an attorney in Arizona\, and a speech therapist in Texas\, who\, when forced to choose between their jobs and their political beliefs\, launch legal battles that expose an attack on freedom of speech across the US. The film traces the impact of state legislation passed in 36 states – including Illinois – designed to penalize individuals and companies that choose to boycott Israel due to its human rights record. A legal thriller with “accidental plaintiffs” at the center of the story\, Boycott is a bracing look at the far-reaching implications of anti-boycott legislation and an inspiring tale of everyday Americans standing up to protect our rights in an age of shifting politics and threats to freedom of speech. \nWhile the original anti-boycott laws passed with wide bi-partisan support\, beginning in 2021\, conservative legislators began to introduce copycat bills inspired by the Israel-focused anti-boycott bills\, taking aim at boycotts of the fossil fuels and firearms industries. Most recently\, legislators modified the bill once more to target those organizing for transgender peoples’ rights\, abortion access\, and workplace equity. Since the start of the year\, over 40 copycat bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country. We hope you’ll join this event to learn more about these laws and their wider implications on our right to voice dissent in America.

SUMMARY:RENTAL EVENT: The State of the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:North Shore Civic Club Presents: The State of the Great Lakes\nThe North Shore Civic Club (NSCC) is a registered 501(c)(3) with a mission to promote civil discourse on pressing issues of the day. NSCC’s main avenue for promoting civil discourse is through forums and events. The inaugural forum\, The State of the Great Lakes\, will address resiliency\, law and policy\, and the economics of the Great Lakes. \nThe Great Lakes hold 84% of North America’s fresh water\, they are an essential component of life in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes support 48 million people with drinking water and provide over $60 billion in wages annually. However\, as fresh water sources in other parts of the country begin to dry up\, increased attention will be on the Great Lakes. \nAt the forum\, attendees will learn how to protect their fresh water source and ensure it is clean\, resilient\, economically robust\, and plentiful for generations to come. Speakers include: \n\nScott Sowa\, Juli Plant Grainger\, Great Lakes Director\, The Nature Conservancy\nJoel Brammeier\, President and CEO of the Alliance for the Great Lakes\nJohn Austin\, Economist from the Brookings Institution and the University of Michigan\n\nSponsors\nThe State of the Great Lakes would not be possible without support from our generous sponsors: the Junior Garden Club of Lake Forest and Angel Water\, Inc.. \nTickets\nTickets can be purchased at northshorecivicclub.org. Early bird pricing ends July 31st. \n  \n
