SUMMARY:Lake Forest Civic Orchestra-"In the Beginning"
DESCRIPTION:The LFCO opens our season of Epics\, Odes\, and Sagas with “In the Beginning…” featuring two takes on the creation story. Haydn opens his epic oratorio The Creation with a musical depiction of the chaos which preceded the creation of the universe. In contrast\, Darius Milhaud\, draws upon various African creation myths in his ballet score La création du monde. Combining both classical and jazz traditions\, La création du monde has been called “a real love affair with jazz.” We look forward to our January performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9\, by beginning where he began\, his Symphony No. 1.\nCellist Jocelyn Gao\, a senior at Stevenson HS joins us for the first movement of Dvorak’s cello concerto.\nHere is the link for tickets: \nhttps://www.lakeforestcivicorchestra.org/concerts-tickets/p/in-the-beginning-october-2024

SUMMARY:Lake Forest Preservation Foundation Features Charles J. Stick & His Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a program featuring Charles J. Stick\, the Virginia-based landscape architect renowned for his historically and culturally-based gardens filled with luxuriant blooms.\nA fascinating new monograph\, Charles J. Stick and His Gardens\, written by Jeff Poole\, puts a spotlight on Stick’s beautiful designs. Focusing on residential gardens\, Stick draws on principles of Palladio\, Charles A. Platt and Russell Page to connect architecture to land and develop enticing pathways between formal plating and the landscape beyond.\nOrganized into two main sections\, the book highlights four landscapes that Stick has designed and nurtured over decades of close collaboration with the owners: Crab Tree Farm since the mid 1980s in Lake Bluff\, Mount Sharon near Charlottesville\, VA\, Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich\, CT\, and Waverley in VA. Each one is examined in depth from a personal\, philosophical and design perspective\, revealing flourishing\, historically grounded landscapes and offering new insights into his process\, as well as the intimacy of his client relationships. \nThe second section of the book features ten additional gardens including others in Lake Forest and Winnetka as well as all over the country that demonstrate Stick’s ability to adapt his signature style to varied geographies. \nThis event was made possible by the generosity of Crab Tree Farm. The program is free\, but registration is required at:  https://www.lfpf.org/events-listing/charles-j-stick-and-his-gardens  \n\nTuesday\, November 12\, 2024\n 6:30 PM 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Judge David Tatel about Memoir "Vision"
DESCRIPTION:“Vision” is memoir by retired Judge David Tatal\, a retired Judge\, about becoming blind\, his legal and judicial careers as well as the newest family addition\, Vixen\, his guide dog.\nThe “moving\, thoughtful\, and inspiring memoir” by Bryan Stevenson\, author of Just Mercy\, about one of America’s most accomplished public servants and legal thinkers—who spent years denying and working around his blindness\, before finally embracing it as an essential part of his identity. \nDavid Tatel has served nearly 30 years on America’s second highest court\, the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit\, where many of our most crucial cases are resolved—or teed up for the Supreme Court. He has championed equal justice for his entire adult life; decided landmark environmental and voting cases; and embodied the ideal of what a great judge should be. Yet he has been blind for the past 50 of his 80-plus years.\nInitially\, he depended upon aides to read texts to him\, and more recently\, a suite of hi-tech solutions has allowed him to listen to reams of documents at high speeds. At first\, he tried to hide his deteriorating vision\, and for years\, he denied that it had any impact on his career. Only recently\, partly thanks to his first-ever guide dog\, Vixen\, has he come to fully accept his blindness and the role it’s played in his personal and professional lives. His story of fighting for justice over many decades\, with and without eyesight\, is an inspiration to us all. \n“This memoir of a judge of the country’s second highest court\, who has been without sight for decades\, goes down like a cool drink on a hot day.” —Scott Turow\, #1 bestselling author of Suspect\n“Deeply moving and packed with wisdom.” —Frank Bruni\, New York Times \nCLICK TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Where Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. \nWe follow\, among others\, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We also witness Dr. Gabor Maté offer trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons. \nThis emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty? \nWe will have a Q&A after the movie with a multi denomination panel.
