SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:Death Café\nPull up a chair\, pour a warm cup of tea\, and enjoy a slice of cake. At a Death Café\, people – often complete strangers – come together to talk openly about death. At first\, it might sound unusual. Yet once the conversation begins\, something shifts. People start to relax\, laugh\, and connect. The simple act of naming what many avoid opens the door to deeper living. \nOur purpose is simple: to increase awareness of death so we can make the most of life. When we face mortality directly\, we often find more gratitude\, courage\, and clarity. Instead of pushing death aside\, we bring it into the light – and\, in doing so\, we invite more meaning into every moment. \nA Place for Honest Conversation\nUnlike a grief support group or counseling session\, a Death Café isn’t about fixing or healing. Rather\, it’s about conversation. It’s a space where curiosity replaces fear and where everyone’s perspective matters. As a death doula\, I’ll offer a gentle prompt or question to spark dialogue. From there\, the discussion flows naturally. Sometimes it’s serious. Other times it’s surprisingly light. Either way\, it’s always honest and alive. \nMoreover\, the Death Café welcomes every faith\, philosophy\, and worldview. Differences are embraced\, and respect anchors our exchange. You can speak\, listen\, or simply reflect – whatever feels right for you. \nBy the end\, most people leave with a sense of connection and renewal. Talking about death doesn’t diminish life – it deepens it. So come for the tea\, stay for the conversation\, and walk away seeing life with fresh eyes. \nCake\, coffee and tea are always served! \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). She is also a 500hr RYT yoga instructor with trauma informed yoga training through The Veteran’s Yoga Project and children’s yoga training from Full of Joy Yoga in CT. She is also a trained death doula through INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association). She is interested in helping others live life more fully and intentionally. \nShe resides in Lake Bluff with her family.

SUMMARY:Approaches to End of Life Care and Grief Seminar
DESCRIPTION:THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND WILL BE RESCHEDULED. \nDiscussing Death\nDying Well sparks honest\, engaging conversations about death and dying. This seminar allows participants to examine how society talks about – and often avoids – the end of life. Other topics include gaps in our care systems and the definition and use of palliative and hospice care. \nYou will learn to navigate death as a unique\, personal process while acquiring tools to make meaningful end-of-life decisions. \nDying Well welcomes anyone ready to face mortality with clarity and courage. This includes those living with serious illness\, loved ones supporting someone at the end of life\, and anyone preparing their own care with intention. \nKey Questions We Will Explore\n\nHow can we navigate the death of a loved one with understanding and compassion? And how can we manage the emotions that follow?\nIn turn\, how might we envision and honor our own dying process?\nFurthermore\, what does a “good death” mean? How can we shape it to reflect our values?\nFinally\, how can we uphold what matters most – personally and culturally – as someone nears the end of life?\n\nThis seminar is not a therapy session. Instead\, it is a candid\, interactive discussion. We will examine the physical and emotional processes of dying. By creating a space for open exploration\, participants will leave feeling empowered. They will approach end-of-life decisions with greater clarity\, confidence\, and compassion.

SUMMARY:Mahjong 102 with Windy City Mahjong
DESCRIPTION:Mahjong Workshop for Intermediate/Players with an Understanding of Fundamentals\nThis “guided play” class is ideal for players who know the basics of American Mahjong and want to strengthen their skills. We keep the group small to ensure steady table time. You get personalized guidance\, real gameplay practice\, and clear\, constructive feedback. \nFirst\, we reinforce the fundamentals. Then we shift into strategy. You’ll practice defensive play and learn to read your opponents. You’ll refine your tile selection\, timing\, and overall decision-making. Each round adds focused tips and gentle instruction. These moments help you think ahead\, evaluate risk\, and build confidence. \nAs the class moves forward\, your game becomes more intentional and more intuitive. By the end\, you’ll feel more confident and more strategic. You’ll also enjoy the lively\, social rhythm of playing with others who share your enthusiasm for this classic game. \nCaroline Larew:  \nCaroline Larew is an American Mahjong instructor in the northern suburbs of Chicago and the founder of  Windy City Mahjong. Drawn to the game for its blend of strategy and camaraderie\, she loves how it offers both a mental challenge and a reason to spend time with friends. \nCaroline brings a strong professional foundation to Windy City Mahjong\, shaped by years in finance and investing. After earning her MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business\, she built a career in private equity before an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis led her to rethink her priorities. Now healthy and cancer-free\, Caroline has found renewed purpose in teaching and building community through Mahjong — a space where strategy\, connection\, and joy intersect. \nA mother of three\, she can often be found cruising around the suburbs in her minivan full of kids\, on the pickleball court\, sharing coffee with friends\, or hunting for hidden gems at estate sales.
