He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! Sign your child up for a fencing class at Gorton. \nThis fencing course is designed for beginners or those who would like to work on basic fencing skills. The class will cover basic fencing rules\, fencing etiquette\, footwork and attack and defense moves. The instructor will lead students in a warm-up\, footwork exercises\, group lessons and bouting. Students are encouraged to dress comfortably and bring water. For ages 7 – 14 \nWhy learn to fence?\nFencing is a great activity to build balance\, physical coordination and agility\, skills that transfer to other sports and daily life. Although fencing can be a physically demanding sport\, you do not need to be a natural athlete to learn to fence. Our fencing class is designed to ease you into the sport and help you connect with your own body. \nThe sport of fencing exercises your mental as well as physical reflexes. Quick thinking\, strategy and creativity are all skills fencing can help enhance. In fact\, fencing’s combined physical activity with mental stimulation can help improve cognitive function and critical thinking skills. Fencing’s code of conduct also helps to teach the importance of discipline\, respect\, responsibility and good sportsmanship. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility. \nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. We’ll taste a few along the way too\, in search of the perfect recipe. Class will feature a few samples made with spirits from North Shore Distillery\, the oldest craft distillery in Illinois\, and be taught by their Chief Cocktail Nerd\, Sonja Kassebaum. The class will work on 3-4 paintings during the course. \nSTUDENTS NEED TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN SUPPLIES:  \n\nArtist Grade Watercolor Pencils (at least 24 colors\, 36 colors is preferred)\nMix Media Paper\n#1 Round Watercolor Brush\n1/8″ Angle Shader Watercolor Brush\nSelection of Small Watercolor Brushes\n\n \nPhilip Schorn – P Schorn Studio – Botanical Color Pencil Artist My botanical renderings are not drawings of plant specimens as seen in scientific books; rather\, they are renderings of plants as seen through the eye of an artist. I can look at the ground; I can see the shapes\, light\, and shadows. I focus on a small portion of the subject and what makes it interesting\, whether that be the individual leaf\, flower\, or snapshot of the ground\, to bring the details to life.\nI have been working with colored pencil for several years and teaching the art for the last three years. I have two books published of my art/techniques on. I have done a number of outdoor shows\, group and individual exhibitions.\nMy process of making a rendering with the detail that I want to have requires a significant amount of time. DESCRIPTION:Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian painter whose portraits are often characterized by their elongated bodies and blank eyes\, distinctively ‘Modigliani’.  Using his technique and soft pastel\, we encourage artists to reflect on\, document\, and share their true story\, feelings\, and mood\, rather than the distorted version we sometimes have of ourselves. \nArt Impact Project uses this basic drawing technique to demonstrate how you can use this process to relax and let your creativity flow.  Using simple art supplies and water\, you’ll be given a prompt to create fun and colorful art.  You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy this unique wellness project.  All supplies provided. In this on-going class Joalida works with teens exploring different mediums\, techniques and subject matter to discover their art style. DESCRIPTION:Learning to breathe is an art form.  Allowing the breath to center and rebalance the body & mind is a practice.  Meditation helps to focus our energy and enhance our lives. Practicing breath and meditation can help with a variety of intentions including relaxation\, stress reduction\, focusing\, intention setting\, directing energy and more. \nEach session we learn how to use the breath in new ways to experience the life force within us and help to direct our energy through intentions. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. Jeremy also teaches privately\, one on one  www.jeremykruse.com and www.jeremykruseactingtraining.com  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMadison Kisst is an actor\, director\, and theatre teacher. She has taught for professional theater companies across the country and for the undergraduate acting program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. As an actor\, some of her credits include: American Repertory Theater\, Lyric Repertory Company\, The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville\, Utah Shakespeare Festival\, Idaho Shakespeare Festival\, Nevada Conservatory Theater\, and Santa Cruz Shakespeare. She has her BA in Theatre Arts and Master of Fine Arts in Performance. \n

DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED. \nJoin Joalida and Susan on a monthly meditation and art evening where we will use visualisation to connect with your inner self to access our universal creativity to live a life of purpose and meaning. Susan will start the evening with a guided meditation and visualisation\, we will then move to Joalida’s studio and explore visually what came up for us during the meditation. No prior art experience required. All materials and snacks provided. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation. \nSusan is local to Lake Bluff and can’t wait to share yoga with more people in her community. She’s been teaching yoga for 6+ years and practicing for 12+ years and received her teacher training at Forever Om. When not on her mat\, Susan gains most of her energy surrounded by friends and family\, love and laughter truly is the best medicine! Susan teaches at Toned Yoga in Lake Bluff and Black Cat Yoga in Libertyville.  \n  \n“When I started my yoga journey\, I couldn’t balance or focus…the concept of flow and presence was foreign.
