DESCRIPTION:Heroes & Villains\nWho will you be for the day—a fearless hero\, a misunderstood villain\, or something in between? In Heroes & Villains\, kids dive into the exciting world of larger-than-life characters and epic storytelling. \nThrough acting workshops\, students will create original scenes inspired by bold\, dynamic figures from stories like Harry Potter\, The Incredibles\, Maleficent\, Frozen\, and Percy Jackson—or any hero or villain they can dream up. Scenes are crafted using improvisation\, character exercises\, and creative collaboration in age-based groups. \nSinging and dancing sessions feature age-appropriate songs and choreography from musicals and movies that capture the drama\, power\, and energy of heroic journeys and villainous plots. \nThis camp welcomes all experience levels. Teaching artists work with each child to assess their current skills and help them progress in a supportive\, encouraging environment. It all culminates in a casual\, end-of-day demonstration where kids perform their scenes\, songs\, and dances. DESCRIPTION:Once Upon a Stage\nStep into a storybook world where classic fairy tales and fresh new fantasies come to life on stage! In Once Upon a Stage\, kids explore the fundamentals of acting\, singing\, and dancing through a rotating class structure that keeps things active\, creative\, and fun. \nGrouped by age\, students will work with professional teaching artists to build original scenes inspired by characters and situations from tales like Cinderella\, Jack and the Beanstalk\, Little Red Riding Hood\, and modern twists like Shrek or Descendants. DESCRIPTION:Join the Safety Town Deputies at Gorton Center!\nA Community-Favorite Camp for Ages 2 to 5\nThe Safety Town Deputies summer camp is a fun\, play-based introduction to safety awareness\, designed especially for young children ages 2 to 5. Held at the Children’s Learning Center at Gorton Center\, this beloved program helps kids learn important life skills in a safe\, welcoming\, and engaging environment. \nOver the course of three fun-filled mornings\, your little one will embark on an exciting journey of discovery. Each day focuses on a big idea—like pet safety\, fire safety\, and understanding the helpful role of police officers—in a way that’s engaging\, age-appropriate\, and just plain fun! \nThrough hands-on activities\, interactive games\, lively songs\, colorful crafts\, and immersive storytelling\, children will learn how to stay safe\, help others\, and build confidence in everyday situations. Whether they’re learning how to approach a friendly dog\, practicing a fire drill with pretend play\, or hearing stories about community heroes\, kids will be having so much fun they won’t even realize how much they’re learning. \nSafety Town Deputies will be held at Gorton Center from Monday\, August 18 through Wednesday\, August 20 from 9 am to 11:30 am\, rain or shine. Bring your child to the Children’s Learning Center entrance upon arrival – pick up will be located under the covered driveway at 11:30 am each morning. \nRegistration is Open Now!\nPlease complete and return the forms below no later than the morning of your child’s first day of camp. DESCRIPTION:THIS CAMP IS NOW CLOSED\nThree-Day Interactive Safety Awareness Program\n\nSafety Town Commanders Camp runs Tuesday August 12  through Thursday August 14 \nThis camp is for 8-10 year-olds only. In order to register for this camp\, your child must be between the ages of 8-10 at the time of camp\, with no exceptions.\n Have a 5-7 year old? Register for Safety Town Majors Camp\n\nWhat A Camp Day Looks Like\nOur Safety Town Commanders Camp is modeled after the original Safety Town\, but with a curriculum built for the next level\, ages 8-10. The focus of this camp will include a review of the original Safety Town Major. We will also go in-depth with experts in areas like fire safety\, internet safety\, self-defense and beyond. Topics will cover many categories pertinent to this age group\, including what to do if your alarm goes off\, gun safety\, walking home alone\, falls\, poison/medicine safety\, bullying/cyberbullying and mindfulness – including yoga. \n\nCamp is dynamic and interactive\, with various what-if scenarios being played out and group discussions moderated by a certified teacher. They will be demonstrating a sprinkler system with a real-live fire in the safe confines of their smokehouse to prompt a discussion about home fire prevention and escape planning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nK9 Reading Buddies of the Northshore: K9 Reading Buddies of the Northshore will bring their therapy dogs on site and teach the campers all about pet safety! Topics covered will include what to do if a scary or unknown dog approaches and the dos and don’ts around dogs.\n\n\n\n\n\nOperation Lifesaver: Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions\, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail crossings and trespassing on or near railroad tracks. Operation Lifesaver will be providing our kids with rail safety education!\n\n  \n  \n  \n \n Yoga with Areta: Our resident yoga instructor will teach about the importance of practicing mindfulness and grounding. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nLFOLA will teach our kids all about outdoor safety\, tick safety\, poisonous plants that are indigenous to our prairies\, and why it is so important to get off our screens and get outdoors! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFit2Defend Academy: This will involve an interactive session where kids learn about self-defense and get to practice moves with each other and an instructor.

SUMMARY:Back To School Sewing Camp with Ciao Bella
DESCRIPTION:This is the perfect camp to gear up for the school year! We will make all projects that your creative camper can use for the upcoming school year. We are going to make a pair of cozy PJ Pants\, a pencil case with velcro and a fleece sweater that your sewer will love wearing during the colder months. \nThis camp will be led by Ciao Bella Sewing. All supplies\, including fabric\, sewing machines\, and sewing notions are provided. It is SEW much fun to sew and create. Students can bring their own sewing machine or use the provided sewing machines. \nStudents should bring a water bottle and a healthy snack every day. *New and returning students are welcome! Ages 7 – 15 \nLearning to sew has many benefits: \n\nSewing allows children to explore their creativity and express themselves through fabric\, colors\, and design choices. They can bring their own ideas to life and create unique garments or crafts that reflect their individuality.\nSewing teaches practical skills that they can use throughout life like learning to sew on buttons\, mend garments\, or even create their own clothing fosters independence and self-sufficiency.\nFollowing patterns\, measuring\, and making precise cuts and stitches develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as well as problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.\nSewing can be a calming and therapeutic activity. The focus and concentration required during sewing can help children relax\, reduce stress\, and improve their overall well-being. It allows them to immerse themselves in a creative process and enjoy a sense of accomplishment when they complete a project.

From color mixing and shaping to adding personal touches\, students will explore their creativity while developing real design skills. \nAt the end\, campers will show off their creations in a fun end-of-week fashion show\, where family and friends are invited to celebrate their hard work and creativity on display! \nEach camper will complete at least five original pieces to take home\, and all materials and supplies are included in the camp price. Gorton Center’s customizable camps offer the perfect solution for busy families and curious kids! With engaging camp sessions available in both the morning and afternoon\, you can mix and match programs to fit your child’s interests and create a dynamic full-day experience. \nTo make things even easier\, Gorton offers a supervised lunchtime option for campers attending both a morning and afternoon session. Our friendly and attentive staff will oversee campers during lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (or until 1:30 PM\, depending on the camp schedule)\, providing a safe and relaxed environment where kids can unwind\, eat\, and socialize with friends between activities. This convenient lunchtime care is available for just $20 per week. \nPlease note that lunch is not provided. June 27  1:00 pm \nCheck out footage from Mr. V’s class this spring. \nCostumes are provided by Gorton Drama Studio. \n \nBill Vaananen is an award-winning music educator and composer who has taught and directed elementary-aged students for over 45 years. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n  \n\nInstructor Madison Kisst is an actor\, director\, and theatre teacher. She has taught for professional theater companies across the country and for the undergraduate acting program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Madison has extensive training in physical and classical theatre\, voice and movement\, and devising. As an actor\, some of her credits include: American Repertory Theater\, Lyric Repertory Company\, The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville\, Utah Shakespeare Festival\, Idaho Shakespeare Festival\, Nevada Conservatory Theater\, and Santa Cruz Shakespeare. She has her BA in Theatre Arts and Master of Fine Arts in Performance. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. DESCRIPTION:New Media Summer Stories Experience: A Filmmaking Program for Teens\nCalling all aspiring filmmakers\, storytellers\, and creatives! This one-of-a-kind summer program invites high school students to explore the exciting world of video storytelling through a hands-on\, collaborative experience. \nOver 10 weeks\, participants will move through every stage of pre-production. Working in teams\, they’ll brainstorm story ideas\, write scripts\, plan shoots\, and prepare production materials. With support from media professionals and local alumni of the High School Media Collective\, students will gain real-world insight into how stories are brought to life on screen. \nThe final weekend offers a thrilling challenge—a 72-hour filmmaking sprint. During this fast-paced experience\, students will take on roles such as directing\, acting\, editing\, sound design\, and cinematography. They’ll produce a short film from start to finish\, gaining practical skills and a deeper understanding of how a creative team operates under pressure. \nIn addition to technical training\, students will walk away with a completed film project for their portfolio\, stronger communication skills\, and the confidence that comes from creating something meaningful. The program fosters not just creativity but also collaboration\, resilience\, and problem-solving—skills essential to any creative career. \nOpen to high school students ages 14 to 18\, this experience is perfect for beginners and seasoned storytellers alike. Whether you’re curious about filmmaking or already passionate about media\, this is your chance to grow\, create\, and connect. \nAbout the Program\nNow in its 8th year\, New Media Summer Stories gives students the chance to collaborate with peers who love filmmaking. Together\, they produce a meaningful short film that follows the guidelines of the All American High School Film Festival’s Complete Experience. \nEach student takes on a role in Pre-Production\, Production\, or Post-Production\, depending on their interests and experience. The Pre-Production phase starts 10 weeks before filming. Drawing Faces Like Da Vinci is a hands-on\, skill-building camp where young artists will learn the timeless techniques of portrait drawing inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. \nOver the course of five immersive sessions\, students will explore da Vinci’s foundational principles\, including facial symmetry\, proportion\, shading\, and the golden ratio. Guided by experienced instructors\, campers will analyze classic Renaissance works like the Vitruvian Man\, while also using modern references from fashion\, sports\, and pop culture to create fresh\, relevant portrait studies that appeal to a wide range of interests and artistic styles. \nThrough a combination of direct instruction\, guided practice\, and creative exploration\, students will develop their observational skills and artistic confidence.
