DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Afternoons with Mr. V\nAttention kids!  This fall\, join award-winning music educator and composer Bill Vaananen for 8 educational and inspirational Wednesday afternoon sessions of exciting songs and activities.  Classes will wrap singing and movement into a tapestry of history\, geography\, and adventure!   A major component of the program will be  Mr. V’s epic work “The Song of Hiawatha”\, a musical tribute to the North American Indian.  A multi-media performance of the entire 30-minute “song” will take place for parents and guests on the final day of class\, Wed. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. DESCRIPTION:Commanders Camp Registration is Now Closed\nThree-Day Interactive Safety Awareness Program\n\nSafety Town Commanders runs Tuesday August 11  through Thursday August 13 \nThis camp is for 8-10 year-olds only. In order to register for this camp\, your child must be between the ages of 8-10 at the time of camp\, with no exceptions.\n Have a 5-7 year old? Register for Safety Town Majors Camp\n\nWhat A Camp Day Looks Like\nOur Safety Town Commanders Camp is modeled after the original Safety Town\, but with a curriculum built for the next level\, ages 8-10. The focus of this camp will include a review of the original Safety Town. We will also go in-depth with experts in areas like fire safety\, internet safety\, self-defense and beyond. Topics will cover many categories pertinent to this age group\, including what to do if your alarm goes off\, gun safety\, walking home alone\, falls\, poison/medicine safety\, bullying/cyberbullying and mindfulness – including yoga. \n\nCamp is dynamic and interactive\, with various what-if scenarios being played out and group discussions moderated by a certified teacher. They’ll creatively cover topics such as gun safety\, bike and skateboard safety\, what to do when you are home alone and cyber safety/online stranger danger.\n\n\n\n\n\nLake Forest Fire Department:  LFFD will teach kids about everything from fireworks safety to first aid. They will be demonstrating a sprinkler system with a real-live fire in the safe confines of their smokehouse to prompt a discussion about home fire prevention and escape planning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOperation Lifesaver: Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions\, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail crossings and trespassing on or near railroad tracks. DESCRIPTION:Take your skills to the next level in this hands-on baking and decorating camp designed for kids who are ready to do it all. We guide campers through the full cookie-making process from start to finish. They mix\, bake\, decorate and create with confidence. As a result\, they leave with new skills and a bakery-style cookie set they’re proud to share. \nFirst\, we start in the kitchen. Campers learn how to roll dough\, cut shapes and bake sugar cookies to perfection. Then\, we move on to royal icing. We show them how to mix\, color and adjust consistency for different decorating techniques. Step by step\, they build skills that bakers use every day. \nNext\, we bring the cookies to life. Campers practice piping\, flooding and adding detailed designs. Along the way\, we encourage creativity and experimentation. They try new techniques\, solve problems and develop their own decorating style. Most importantly\, they gain confidence with each cookie they complete. \nBy the end of the week\, each camper creates a full set of decorated cookies from scratch. DESCRIPTION:Join Gorton Center’s Lunch Bunch!\nLooking to give your child a full day of summer fun\, learning\, and creativity? Gorton Center’s customizable camps offer the perfect solution for busy families and curious kids! With engaging camp sessions available in both the morning and afternoon\, you can mix and match programs to fit your child’s interests and create a dynamic full-day experience. \nTo make things even easier\, Gorton offers a supervised lunchtime option for campers attending both a morning and afternoon session. Our friendly and attentive staff will oversee campers during lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (or until 1:30 PM\, depending on the camp schedule)\, providing a safe and relaxed environment where kids can unwind\, eat\, and socialize with friends between activities. This convenient lunchtime care is available for just $20 per week. \nPlease note that lunch is not provided. Campers must bring their own sack lunch and drink each day.  \nImportant Registration Information:\nYou must pre-register for all camps and lunchtime supervision. Registration closes the Friday before the camp week begins (each Monday)\, so don’t wait to reserve your child’s spot! First\, they create small-scale outfits on their very own mini mannequins. Then\, they design custom jewelry to match their looks. In addition\, they enjoy fun fashion-themed games that spark imagination and teamwork. They also design stylish paper doll outfits and experiment with different patterns and textures. \nWith step-by-step guidance from our EV Fine Arts instructor\, students build confidence as they learn real sewing skills. They practice using a sewing machine and\, most importantly\, they sew a custom outfit they can proudly wear home at the end of the week. Every project encourages creativity\, independence\, and self-expression. \nAt the end of the week\, excitement fills the room during our “Fashion Show Friday.” Students walk the runway and proudly showcase their handmade creations for family and friends. Gorton Center’s customizable camps offer the perfect solution for busy families and curious kids! With engaging camp sessions available in both the morning and afternoon\, you can mix and match programs to fit your child’s interests and create a dynamic full-day experience. \nTo make things even easier\, Gorton offers a supervised lunchtime option for campers attending both a morning and afternoon session. Our friendly and attentive staff will oversee campers during lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (or until 1:30 PM\, depending on the camp schedule)\, providing a safe and relaxed environment where kids can unwind\, eat\, and socialize with friends between activities. This convenient lunchtime care is available for just $20 per week. \nPlease note that lunch is not provided. Campers must bring their own sack lunch and drink each day.  \nImportant Registration Information:\nYou must pre-register for all camps and lunchtime supervision. Registration closes the Friday before the camp week begins (each Monday)\, so don’t wait to reserve your child’s spot! SUMMARY:Sewing Camp: Hand Embroidery
DESCRIPTION:Hand Embroidery\nCalling all fashionistas interested in learning more about hand embroidery\, this is the perfect camp for you! During this one week camp\, sewers will learn how to hand embroider using embroidery hoops. We will combine our skills and embroider directly on jean jackets or students can do an applique technique to attached their designs using the machines. Students can choose to add their hand embroidery project onto their machine project or keep separate. This camp will be led by Ciao Bella Sewing. \nAll supplies\, including fabric\, sewing machines\, and sewing notions are provided. It is SEW much fun to sew and create. Students can bring their own sewing machine or use the provided sewing machines. Students should bring a water bottle and healthy snack everyday. *New and returning students are welcome! *Jean jackets will be provided OR students can choose to provide their own. \nAges 7 – 13 YO

Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. Madison is a member of the performance faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Middle Tennessee State University. \n  \n  \n  \nMatt Mueller is an actor\, musician\, former pirate\, and part-time wizard. Outside GDS his most recent credits include Harry Potter and Cursed Child\, and he’s excited to be back with the wonderful storytellers of Gorton Drama Studio after last summer in Neverland!! \n  \n  \n  \nCarla Garippo\, dance teacher/choreographer\, received her professional dance training from Ruth Page Center for the Arts and was a principal dancer of The Ruth Page Civic Ballet Company of Chicago. She is fluent in Ballet\, Jazz\, Tap\, Hip-Hop\, Modern\, Lyrical\, Contemporary\, Poms\, Pointe\, Musical Theatre\, Stretch/Conditioning and Character. Some of Carla’s credits include: The Chicago Tribune Charities production of “The Nutcracker ” at The Arie Crown Theatre\, Dirty Dancing\, Carnaval at The Victor Hotel\, Dance Chicago\, MTVs Sweet 16\, as well as various music videos and concerts nationwide.
