To begin\, you’ll explore the different types of watercolor pencils and papers. Next\, you’ll practice applying color both dry and wet. After that\, you’ll learn how to layer and blend effectively. Finally\, you’ll activate pigment with water to achieve luminous\, painterly effects. As you move through each stage\, you’ll see how the medium offers both expressive washes and fine detail – all with the stroke of a pencil. \nEach session will build on the last. First\, new techniques will be introduced. Then\, guided projects will give you the chance to practice them right away. Consequently\, your skills will grow consistently and your confidence will strengthen. DESCRIPTION:Draw & Paint with Joalida\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level? \nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. In fact\, some studies suggest that practicing art may even help slow cognitive decline. \nCheryl Steiger is a Chicago area artist and teacher. Cheryl grew up in Riverwoods\, IL. She studied fine and commercial art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. In 1979\, she became a freelance illustrator\, also working on commissioned pieces and producing audio-visual shows\, cartooning and fashion illustration. Cheryl has been teaching art for the past 30 years at many Chicago institutions\, including The Art Center of Highland Park\, The Evanston Art Center and Edgebrook Chicago Public School. She shows her fine art locally and around the world. In the summer of 2007\, Cheryl participated in Chicago’s ecologically-themed Public Art Project\, Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet. Her small globe was on exhibit at The United Nations\, NY and The Kennedy Center\, and was purchased by the “Clinton Initiative”. The large globe is still being exhibited internationally.  \n “Creating art is my passion. Bringing my internal vision to the canvas to be shared is my greatest pleasure.”

This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, J’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, J gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

We will discuss the values and beliefs behind existing well-known brands and their visual identities and how shapes and colour can be used to represent ideas and beliefs. Children will then explore the values and ideas that are important to them and translate those into a personalized logo through a choice of art materials.  Ages 7 – 11 \nVee Gunn is a local artist and creates vibrant\, unapologetic greeting cards and designs. With over 20 years experience in advertising\, Vee pulls on both her marketing background as well as her true passion of art and poetry to create personalised and empowering art classes where children can unlock their imagination and produce work they are proud of. She believes that creativity plays a crucial role for mental well being and through her teaching\, Vee hopes to inspire confidence and a lasting love for art in every child.

DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR RESCHEDULED DATES!\nIn this creative and fun art class\, children will explore the world of collage by designing a personalized poster featuring the child’s name initial. Using a variety of materials such as magazines\, stickers\, fabric\, buttons and more they will create a vibrant collage where all the images they use begin with their name letter. By the end of the class they’ll have a custom designed piece of ‘finding’ art to proudly display at home. Alongside this they will also be given an 8 x 10 poster of their name letter designed by Vee. Ages 7 – 11
