SUMMARY:Botanical Mosaic Series with Dandelion Gallery & Studio
DESCRIPTION:The Botanical Mosaic Series is a multi-session\, hands-on experience that introduces participants to the fundamentals of mosaic art while building toward the creation of a one-of-a-kind botanical-inspired masterpiece.\nThroughout the series\, participants will learn about the tools and materials used in mosaic making and gain hands-on experience with the major stages of the process\, including design and composition\, understanding and safely using mosaic tools\, cutting and arranging pieces\, applying and adhering materials\, and grouting and finishing the artwork.\nThe final phase brings an additional creative dimension to the traditional mosaic process. Participants will explore ways to incorporate botanical elements into their finished pieces\, combining texture\, color\, natural inspiration\, and personal artistic choices to transform each mosaic into something truly unique. Father-and-son duo Peter and Torsten Borowski will lead this lively evening of music. Belt out every chorus or simply sing along with friends. Either way\, you’ll celebrate some of music’s greatest hits together. \nPeter and Torsten share a musical journey that spans two generations and two countries. It also includes countless hours at the piano. Together\, they’ll perform songs they’ve loved for years. Enjoy Elton John ballads\, Billy Joel classics and Beatles favorites. Along the way\, they’ll share stories and invite everyone to join the music. \nSing at Gorton offers a fun and welcoming way to experience these legendary songs. You don’t need musical training or singing experience. Just bring your love of great music and your willingness to join in. \nThe program lasts about 45–60 minutes. Come sing\, listen\, laugh and enjoy an evening of music together. \n\n\nGood to Know\n\nOpen to all ages – come on your own or bring family and friends\nNo singing experience needed – if you love these songs\, you’re ready\nLyrics will be provided\nLed by father-and-son musicians Peter and Torsten Borowski\nThe evening concludes with refreshments and conversation\n\nMeet Our Musical Leaders\nPeter was born in London\, one of six children raised by a strict Polish father and a Cockney mother who believed childhood was best spent holding a musical instrument. Piano\, guitar\, violin\, oboe – the house ran like a tiny\, under-rehearsed conservatory. His older sister\, Julie\, staged living-room concerts where every child had to perform. Peter got the improvised shaker – a detergent bottle with dry rice. He has never fully recovered. He took piano lessons too. His Victorian teacher liked to rap his knuckles with a ruler until he cried\, so when she passed away\, Peter observed a respectful\, dry-eyed silence. Free at last\, he started playing songs he actually liked and found theatre at sixteen. Design became his career\, but only after ten years in London theatre\, where he acted\, sang\, built sets and worked backstage. Fast-forward forty-five years. Peter is now Head of Global Design at Tyson Foods. In his spare time\, he ambushes pianos in restaurants\, at weddings\, in hotel lobbies and once at Heathrow Terminal 3. Always uninvited. Always undeterred. Never once thrown off. Yet. He fell for Billy Joel\, Elton John and the Beatles at fifteen and never recovered from that either. His voice and playing may be a touch rusty\, but he can still belt out a good song. \nTorsten was born in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, the elder of two brothers. His parents were liberal\, creative and quietly united in the conviction that their sons would play the piano: a Maryland-born mother and a father whose bio you have\, in all likelihood\, just endured. Naturally\, there were lessons. Torsten and his brother\, Jensen\, poured more talent into escaping the piano than they ever spent at it. And for a glorious stretch\, the strategy held. Then\, somewhere between adolescence and adulthood\, came the discovery every teen dreads – the parents had been right from the very first scale. The musical awakening began modestly – playing the saxophone in the Lake Bluff Elementary School Band. At the University of Richmond\, he directed and produced for the Richmond Octaves a cappella group and sang in the Schola Cantorum choir\, before going on to write\, produce\, arrange\, perform\, record\, mix and edit his debut single\, “My Love.” It is on Spotify\, for anyone with the good sense to look it up. By day\, Torsten is Lead Medical Assistant at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute\, with medical school in his sight. By night\, his ambitions run wilder – sold-out arenas\, screaming fans and a rockstar’s life. \n

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Afternoons with Mr. V\nAttention kids!  This fall\, join award-winning music educator and composer Bill Vaananen for 8 educational and inspirational Wednesday afternoon sessions of exciting songs and activities.  Classes will wrap singing and movement into a tapestry of history\, geography\, and adventure!   A major component of the program will be  Mr. V’s epic work “The Song of Hiawatha”\, a musical tribute to the North American Indian.  A multi-media performance of the entire 30-minute “song” will take place for parents and guests on the final day of class\, Wed. Nov. 18 at 4:30 p.m.  Older elementary kids (2nd-5th) will find the music especially exciting and inspiring!  \n\nAges: 5-11\nPrice: $400\nWednesdays\, 9/30 to 11/18\nTime: 4:00 – 5:15\n\nMeet the GDS Faculty\n \nBill Vaananen is an award-winning music educator and composer who has taught and directed elementary-aged students for over 45 years. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. DESCRIPTION:Calling all future fashion designers! The EV Junior Fashion Workshop is perfect for young fashionistas ready to explore their passion for sewing and fashion design. Students will design small-scale outfits on their very own mini mannequins\, create custom jewelry\, participate in fun fashion games\, design paper doll outfits & more. With guidance from our EV Fine Arts instructor\, students will sew a custom outfit to wear using a sewing machine! \nThe class series concludes with our “EV Fashion Show\,” where students proudly showcase their handmade creations. Please note\, there is a snack break included in each session\, so don’t forget to pack a snack! No experience needed\, open to youth ages 4-6.

DESCRIPTION:Comics Lab\nBring your ideas to life in Comics Lab! This supportive six-week class gives students the space to start or continue their comics journey. \nStudents will create their own original comics from start to finish. Along the way\, they’ll explore the building blocks of visual storytelling. Learn how to develop characters\, create expressive drawings\, plan panels\, and tell a story through images and words. \nEach session includes fun exercises and creative challenges. These activities will help students generate new ideas and try different approaches. Push your creativity\, experiment with new styles\, and discover what makes your stories unique. \nStudents can work at their own pace and develop their own creative voice. Whether you’re new to comics or already have experience\, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. \nBasic drawing supplies are provided. Bring your ideas\, imagination\, and a willingness to experiment! \n \nGraham Henderson is a comics creator and founder of Attune arts\, an adaptive arts and recreation company. He has published comics that have been translated into multiple languages\, exhibited at comic cons across the Midwest\, and found tremendous joy in making drawings come to life.
