SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Carole Pearlman
DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists! This after school art class will not only provide an incredible outlet for self-expression but also help students to develop motor skills\, visual-spatial skills\, and problem-solving skills. Each week a different artist will be featured to inspire students to create their own unique piece of art. This class can get messy\, so please wear old clothing or bring an apron/smock. For grades K – 3rd \nCarole Pearlman’s lifelong fascination with creativity began as a child\, in a neighborhood art class\, where making art in the backyard was the only agenda for an entire summer. Many art classes later Carole completed a BFA in painting\, a MEd in Educational Therapy\, and an MA in Developmental Psychology. Integrating the disciplines of art\, education\, and psychology Carole developed The Joy of Creativity Art program. Carole works as a facilitator of creativity with students ages 4 to 84! Through her teaching\, research\, and daily practice\, she believes that being creative is an essential part of a balanced life. Carole is a professional artist and certified teacher.

DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach session includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Then\, they’ll transform these unexpected materials into artworks and keepsakes they’re proud of. \nTo begin\, every session includes a friendly\, guided lesson. That way\, no one ever feels stuck. After that\, there’s plenty of room to experiment\, make choices\, and follow their imagination. There’s no single “right” way to create – and that’s the whole point. \nMost importantly\, our club is relaxed and encouraging. Mess is welcome\, and every idea is worth exploring. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. DESCRIPTION:Get ready to squeeze\, squish\, and create in Squishy Lab! This hands-on workshop invites young creators to explore\, experiment\, and have fun. \nKids will use exciting materials to make their own unique squishy creations. They’ll play with bright colors\, bold patterns\, fun textures\, and silly designs. Each project gives them a new way to express their creativity. \nFirst\, participants will learn simple techniques for creating and decorating their squishies. Then\, they can add their own personal touches. Kids can create cute animals\, funny faces\, colorful patterns\, or something completely original. There’s no wrong way to design a squishy! \nAlong the way\, kids will strengthen fine motor skills and build creative confidence. They’ll also practice making choices and experimenting with new ideas. Most importantly\, they’ll enjoy plenty of hands-on fun in a relaxed and encouraging environment. \nAt the end of Squishy Lab\, every participant will take home their handmade creations. DESCRIPTION:Build a Mini Woodland House in this fun\, hands-on workshop designed for older kids who love to create. Over two sessions\, young makers will design and build a mini woodland house from start to finish. Along the way\, they’ll practice problem-solving\, use their imagination\, and develop basic woodworking and crafting skills.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFirst\, participants will sand and assemble their miniature house using small pieces of wood and driftwood. Then they’ll bring their creation to life with paint and other decorative details. Every house will be unique and reflect each child’s creativity. \nNext\, during the second session\, students will mount their finished house on a sturdy base. They’ll also create a charming woodland landscape using natural materials such as moss\, rocks\, sticks\, and bark. Finally\, they’ll add whimsical finishing touches\, including a tiny twine clothesline and other found objects\, to complete their magical scene. \nBy the end of the workshop\, each child will build a mini woodland house to take home and proudly display. This beginner-friendly class encourages creativity\, builds confidence\, and inspires a deeper appreciation for nature through imaginative\, hands-on making. \nAges 9 – 12
