October 25 at 10 am \nPrice: $325 \n \nBill Vaananen is an award-winning music educator and composer who has taught and directed elementary-aged students for over 45 years. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n  \n\n  \n  \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez!  \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach fencing lesson includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. DESCRIPTION:Draw & Paint with Joalida\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, J’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, J gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Safety Town Deputies at Gorton Center!\nA Community-Favorite Camp for Ages 2 to 5\nThe Safety Town Deputies summer camp is a fun\, play-based introduction to safety awareness\, designed especially for young children ages 2 to 5. Held at the Children’s Learning Center at Gorton Center\, this beloved program helps kids learn important life skills in a safe\, welcoming\, and engaging environment. \nOver the course of three fun-filled mornings\, your little one will embark on an exciting journey of discovery. Each day focuses on a big idea—like pet safety\, fire safety\, and understanding the helpful role of police officers—in a way that’s engaging\, age-appropriate\, and just plain fun! \nThrough hands-on activities\, interactive games\, lively songs\, colorful crafts\, and immersive storytelling\, children will learn how to stay safe\, help others\, and build confidence in everyday situations. Whether they’re learning how to approach a friendly dog\, practicing a fire drill with pretend play\, or hearing stories about community heroes\, kids will be having so much fun they won’t even realize how much they’re learning. \nSafety Town Deputies will be held at Gorton Center from Monday\, August 18 through Wednesday\, August 20 from 9 am to 11:30 am\, rain or shine. Bring your child to the Children’s Learning Center entrance upon arrival – pick up will be located under the covered driveway at 11:30 am each morning. \nRegistration is Open Now!\nPlease complete and return the forms below no later than the morning of your child’s first day of camp. DESCRIPTION:This is the perfect camp to gear up for the school year! We will make all projects that your creative camper can use for the upcoming school year. We are going to make a pair of cozy PJ Pants\, a pencil case with velcro and a fleece sweater that your sewer will love wearing during the colder months. \nThis camp will be led by Ciao Bella Sewing. All supplies\, including fabric\, sewing machines\, and sewing notions are provided. It is SEW much fun to sew and create. Students can bring their own sewing machine or use the provided sewing machines. \nStudents should bring a water bottle and a healthy snack every day. *New and returning students are welcome! Ages 7 – 15 \nLearning to sew has many benefits: \n\nSewing allows children to explore their creativity and express themselves through fabric\, colors\, and design choices. They can bring their own ideas to life and create unique garments or crafts that reflect their individuality.\nSewing teaches practical skills that they can use throughout life like learning to sew on buttons\, mend garments\, or even create their own clothing fosters independence and self-sufficiency.\nFollowing patterns\, measuring\, and making precise cuts and stitches develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as well as problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.\nSewing can be a calming and therapeutic activity. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. Jeremy also teaches privately\, one on one  www.jeremykruse.com and www.jeremykruseactingtraining.com  \n \nDirector Madison Kisst is an actor\, director\, and theatre teacher. She has taught for professional theater companies across the country and for the undergraduate acting program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Chicago Summer Stories is a unique media camp designed for middle school students. They’ll explore the exciting world of video production using a tool they already have—their iPhones. \nThis hands-on\, immersive camp walks students through every stage of video storytelling. From brainstorming ideas and writing scripts to filming and editing\, campers dive into the creative process from day one. They’ll work in small teams\, experiment with camera techniques\, and learn to tell powerful stories using their own voice and vision. \nWhat sets this camp apart is its focus on mentorship and collaboration. High school students from the LFHS New Media program and middle school media teachers help lead the way.
