Each project gives them a new way to express their creativity. \nFirst\, participants will learn simple techniques for creating and decorating their squishies. Then\, they can add their own personal touches. Kids can create cute animals\, funny faces\, colorful patterns\, or something completely original. There’s no wrong way to design a squishy! \nAlong the way\, kids will strengthen fine motor skills and build creative confidence. They’ll also practice making choices and experimenting with new ideas. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. There’s no single “right” way to create – and that’s the whole point. \nMost importantly\, our club is relaxed and encouraging. Mess is welcome\, and every idea is worth exploring. Along the way\, children build real confidence. They learn not only how to make things\, but also how to trust their own creativity. \nAs a result\, they begin to see the world a little differently. Along the way\, they strengthen acting skills\, stage presence\, vocal technique\, and ensemble work in a fun and supportive environment. \nStudents will perform songs and scenes inspired by hit musicals and pop anthems\, including This Is Me\, Shake It Off\, Roar\, Brave\, and selections from High School Musical and The Greatest Showman. First\, instructors introduce a curated list of material. Then\, students help choose which songs and scenes they will rehearse and perform. \nThroughout the session\, students rehearse scenes\, learn group and small-ensemble songs\, and practice simple choreography. As they rehearse\, they will strengthen storytelling skills\, develop memorable characters\, and grow as confident performers. At the same time\, they will build teamwork\, creativity\, and stage confidence. \nPresentation: The session concludes with a presentation for family and friends. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

Register for Safety Town Majors Camp\n\nWhat A Camp Day Looks Like\nOur Safety Town Commanders Camp is modeled after the original Safety Town\, but with a curriculum built for the next level\, ages 8-10. With engaging camp sessions available in both the morning and afternoon\, you can mix and match programs to fit your child’s interests and create a dynamic full-day experience. \nTo make things even easier\, Gorton offers a supervised lunchtime option for campers attending both a morning and afternoon session. Our friendly and attentive staff will oversee campers during lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (or until 1:30 PM\, depending on the camp schedule)\, providing a safe and relaxed environment where kids can unwind\, eat\, and socialize with friends between activities. This convenient lunchtime care is available for just $20 per week. \nPlease note that lunch is not provided. Campers must bring their own sack lunch and drink each day.  \nImportant Registration Information:\nYou must pre-register for all camps and lunchtime supervision. You also experiment with character design\, expressions\, action scenes\, and visual storytelling techniques. \nEach class begins with a short lesson that introduces a new comics skill or technique. Afterward\, jump into guided workshop time where you apply what you learned right away. Work step-by-step on original comic pages\, complete creative exercises\, or develop a personal project from concept to finished pages. In addition\, receive feedback and encouragement in a supportive studio environment. \nComics Lab Camp welcomes artists of all experience levels. Plus\, the supportive environment makes it easy for beginners and returning sewists to feel successful. \nBy the end of the week\, campers head back to school with new skills\, handmade projects\, and pride in what they’ve created. Most importantly\, they leave inspired and ready to keep sewing long after camp ends. \nThis camp will be led by Ciao Bella Sewing. All supplies\, including fabric\, sewing machines\, and sewing notions are provided. It is SEW much fun to sew and create. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. Jeremy also teaches privately\, one on one  www.jeremykruse.com and www.jeremykruseactingtraining.com  \n  \n  \n  \nMadison Kisst is a professional actor\, director\, and educator with extensive training in physical and classical theatre\, voice and movement\, and devising. Recently\, she has served as the Fight/Intimacy director for Middle Tennessee State University’s production of Clue: On Stage and Nashville Repertory Theatre’s production of Sister Act. She has her BA in Theatre Arts from California State University Chico and Master of Fine Arts in Performance from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Madison is a member of the performance faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Middle Tennessee State University. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMatt Mueller is an actor\, musician\, former pirate\, and part-time wizard. Outside GDS his most recent credits include Harry Potter and Cursed Child\, and he’s excited to be back with the wonderful storytellers of Gorton Drama Studio after last summer in Neverland!!\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCarla Garippo\, dance teacher/choreographer\, received her professional dance training from Ruth Page Center for the Arts and was a principal dancer of The Ruth Page Civic Ballet Company of Chicago. She is fluent in Ballet\, Jazz\, Tap\, Hip-Hop\, Modern\, Lyrical\, Contemporary\, Poms\, Pointe\, Musical Theatre\, Stretch/Conditioning and Character. Some of Carla’s credits include: The Chicago Tribune Charities production of “The Nutcracker ” at The Arie Crown Theatre\, Dirty Dancing\, Carnaval at The Victor Hotel\, Dance Chicago\, MTVs Sweet 16\, as well as various music videos and concerts nationwide. Carla teaches dancers of all ages and levels and is excited to be a staff member at Gorton Drama Studio.

DESCRIPTION:Join Gorton Center’s Lunch Bunch!\nLooking to give your child a full day of summer fun\, learning\, and creativity? Gorton Center’s customizable camps offer the perfect solution for busy families and curious kids! With engaging camp sessions available in both the morning and afternoon\, you can mix and match programs to fit your child’s interests and create a dynamic full-day experience. \nTo make things even easier\, Gorton offers a supervised lunchtime option for campers attending both a morning and afternoon session. Our friendly and attentive staff will oversee campers during lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (or until 1:30 PM\, depending on the camp schedule)\, providing a safe and relaxed environment where kids can unwind\, eat\, and socialize with friends between activities. This convenient lunchtime care is available for just $20 per week. \nPlease note that lunch is not provided. Campers must bring their own sack lunch and drink each day.  \nImportant Registration Information:\nYou must pre-register for all camps and lunchtime supervision. Registration closes the Friday before the camp week begins (each Monday)\, so don’t wait to reserve your child’s spot! SUMMARY:Sewing Camp: Taylor Swift Theme
DESCRIPTION:Camp registration opens on Monday\, February 2 at 10 am\nCalling all Swifties! In this Taylor Swift–inspired sewing camp\, kids will stitch\, design\, bead friendship bracelets and create projects inspired by the music\, colors\, and eras they love—while learning real sewing skills in a fun\, creative environment. Campers will sew Taylor Swift themed PJ Pants\, trendy bags using Taylor Swift fabric\,a Taylor Swift Pillow and Skirt. We will use combinations of Taylor Swift fabrics and embellishments! This camp will be led by Ciao Bella Sewing. All supplies\, including fabric\, sewing machines\, and sewing notions are provided. \nIt is SEW much fun to sew and create. Students can bring their own sewing machine or use the provided sewing machines. Students should bring a water bottle and healthy snack everyday. *New and returning students are welcome! \nAges 7 – 13 YO

SUMMARY:Turning Teen: Body Basics for Girls
DESCRIPTION:Turning Teen is here for #GirlMoms\, #GirlDads\, and any other trusted adult in a young person’s life. We know it can be hard to talk with a girl about puberty. Or sexual or mental health. And other issues relating to her body. After all\, many of our parents found it hard\, too. Some of us never learned how to discuss – without secrecy\, embarrassment\, or worse\, shame – what it means to turn into a teen. \nWe can fix that. Turning Teen has the support and guidance you need. Interactive classes and workshops\, offered in person or online\, provide age-appropriate\, medically accurate information in an engaging and fun setting. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn about female anatomy\, puberty\, body changes\, body safety\, and more! Turning Teen offers interactive pediatrician-developed educational workshops that are fun\, modern\, and medically accurate! \nFor girls 8+ (who haven’t started puberty yet or are in the early stages) and their parent/trusted adult. \nTurning Teen\, founded by Dr. Lisa Klein and Dr. Carrie Leff\, helps families talk openly about puberty\, bodies\, and sex. Our programs\, led by medical and mental health professionals\, provide accurate\, age-appropriate information to make these conversations more comfortable for kids and their caregivers.   \nDr. Jessica Reggi is Chicagoland’s Turning Teen board-certified pediatrician. She practiced clinical pediatrics throughout Chicago for about eight years before transitioning to nonprofit leadership. She is passionate about the intersection of health and education and has facilitated trainings about vaccines\, vaping\, and more for school districts\, community organizations\, and health champions across the country.
