SUMMARY:Sing at Gorton - Music from Wicked and Wizard of Oz
DESCRIPTION:Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Gorton!\nCome sing at Gorton! This October\, we’re holding a Wicked/Wizard of Oz–themed community sing led by Jackie Jasperson! Join us for an evening down the Yellow Brick Road\, celebrating the songs and stories of Oz. Feel free to don any sparkles\, colors or costumes you like – whether you’re channeling Elphaba\, Dorothy\, a Munchkin or just love a bit of emerald sparkle\, come as you are (or as you wish to be)! \nFirst\, we’ll warm up! Next\, we will sing a selection of favorites\, including: \n\nSomewhere Over the Rainbow\nDefying Gravity\nDing-Dong! The Witch Is Dead\nWe’re Off to See the Wizard\n\nNo experience is necessary\, and there’s no future commitment – just a chance to share music in a welcoming\, low-pressure setting. \nThe evening lasts about 45–60 minutes\, followed by time to connect. \nGood to know\nOpen to all ages – bring the whole family \nNo experience or vocal knowledge necessary \nCostumes\, sparkles and colorful attire encouraged (but never required!) \nOne-off event with no future commitment \n  \nMeet Your Leader \n \nFor over 20 years\, Jackie has been teaching\, conducting\, directing and performing in a variety of musical and theatre genres\, including classical\, choral\, jazz\, musical theatre and pop. She now enthusiastically teaches private and group voice lessons all over Chicagoland\, including at the Old Town School of Music\, in addition to performing jazz standards and pop classics with her band. Jackie has a passion for helping people find their voice and confidence through lessons in breath support\, vocal tone\, intonation\, range expansion\, dynamics\, music theory and phrasing. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Theatre from the University of Wisconsin. \nSing at Gorton is a welcoming community sing series designed to bring people together in a fun\, informal way. Each event is themed around a different style of music\, led by local hosts and open to everyone — no experience or vocal knowledge necessary. These one-off gatherings last about 45–60 minutes and end with refreshments\, making it easy to join in\, connect and sing. \n

SUMMARY:Everything Can Be Art with Vee Gunn
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS HAS SOLD OUT!\nEach week\, children discover a world of mixed-media materials. They’ll work with upcycled clothing and fabrics\, pre-loved crockery\, beads\, buttons\, ribbons\, and more. Then\, they’ll transform these unexpected materials into artworks and keepsakes they’re proud of. \nTo begin\, every session includes a friendly\, guided lesson. That way\, no one ever feels stuck. After that\, there’s plenty of room to experiment\, make choices\, and follow their imagination. There’s no single “right” way to create – and that’s the whole point. \nMost importantly\, our club is relaxed and encouraging. Mess is welcome\, and every idea is worth exploring. Along the way\, children build real confidence. They learn not only how to make things\, but also how to trust their own creativity. \nAs a result\, they begin to see the world a little differently. Suddenly\, an everyday object can be full of possibility. Something old or forgotten can become something beautiful and new. \nIt’s creative\, hands-on\, and a little bit magical. At the same time\, it introduces big ideas about imagination\, resourcefulness\, and caring for our planet. By giving old things new life\, children discover just how much can be created from what we already have. \nEach week\, your child will leave with something they made themselves. Even better\, they’ll leave with a growing belief that they are an artist. \nNo experience needed. No pressure to be “good.” Just bring curiosity – we’ll supply the rest. \nAges 7 – 13

DESCRIPTION:THIS CAMP HAS BEEN CANCELLED\nNo school? No problem! Join Vee for Mini Art & Craft camp!  Half or full day mini camps available. \nMornings: 3D Arts & Crafts. Mornings are about breaking free from flat\, basic artwork on paper and making pictures that truly come alive. We explore layering techniques that give canvases and drawings real depth\, texture and dimension — building up surfaces\, adding raised and mixed-media elements\, and learning how to lead the eye and shift focus so a piece has movement and a sense of place. \nAfternoons: The Creativity Hack. Afternoons are where we dive into how art actually works. We explore how something might look or be drawn\, and the clever\, playful “hacks” artists use to get the same striking effects — the shortcuts\, tricks and techniques that make a picture come alive. We experiment with abstract art techniques\, discover different ways to capture and reimagine what we see\, and pick up real skills that children can build on and carry into everything they make. \nAges 7 – 13

SUMMARY:Tiny Tots Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Tiny Tots Ballet introduces young dancers to the joy of ballet in a fun\, welcoming\, and nurturing environment. This engaging class gives little ones a playful first experience with dance and movement. \nEach class combines music\, movement\, and imaginative play. Every dancer can learn and participate at their own pace. We celebrate effort\, creativity\, and the excitement of trying something new. \nNo previous dance experience is needed. SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:THEME: SPOOKY & STRANGE\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Lezlie
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding artist in the family? Give their creativity room to grow in this engaging after-school art class designed specifically for students in Grades 1–4! \nEach class is thoughtfully structured to balance artistic freedom with meaningful learning. We begin with a free-draw session\, allowing students time to warm up\, express themselves\, and get their creative energy flowing. From there\, we dive into the world of art history by introducing an “Artist of the Day”—a renowned or influential figure whose work provides the inspiration for that day’s project. \nStudents will explore various artistic movements\, mediums\, and styles from around the world\, helping them gain a broader understanding of art and its cultural significance. With guidance and encouragement\, they’ll create their own artwork inspired by the featured artist\, putting their personal spin on classic techniques while developing new skills and confidence. \nThe class wraps up with group clean-up\, an age-appropriate art discussion that encourages observation and expression\, and a fun “draw-a-long” activity to reinforce what they’ve learned in a playful and supportive way. \nMore than just an art class\, this is a space where young artists can explore\, reflect\, and connect with the wider world through creativity. It’s a perfect opportunity for self-expression\, experimentation\, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the arts and global perspectives.

SUMMARY:Sing at Gorton - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road\, Hello Penny Lane: An Evening of Elton\, Billy and the Beatles
DESCRIPTION:Come Sing at Gorton\n\n \nJoin us for Sing at Gorton and travel down the Yellow Brick Road to Penny Lane\, with a few musical stops along the way. \nSing the unforgettable songs of Elton John\, Billy Joel and The Beatles. Father-and-son duo Peter and Torsten Borowski will lead this lively evening of music. Belt out every chorus or simply sing along with friends. Either way\, you’ll celebrate some of music’s greatest hits together. \nPeter and Torsten share a musical journey that spans two generations and two countries. It also includes countless hours at the piano. Together\, they’ll perform songs they’ve loved for years. Enjoy Elton John ballads\, Billy Joel classics and Beatles favorites. Along the way\, they’ll share stories and invite everyone to join the music. \nSing at Gorton offers a fun and welcoming way to experience these legendary songs. You don’t need musical training or singing experience. Just bring your love of great music and your willingness to join in. \nThe program lasts about 45–60 minutes. Afterward\, stay for refreshments and connect with fellow music lovers. There’s no future commitment and no pressure to perform. Come sing\, listen\, laugh and enjoy an evening of music together. \n\n\nGood to Know\n\nOpen to all ages – come on your own or bring family and friends\nNo singing experience needed – if you love these songs\, you’re ready\nLyrics will be provided\nLed by father-and-son musicians Peter and Torsten Borowski\nThe evening concludes with refreshments and conversation\n\nMeet Our Musical Leaders\nPeter was born in London\, one of six children raised by a strict Polish father and a Cockney mother who believed childhood was best spent holding a musical instrument. Piano\, guitar\, violin\, oboe – the house ran like a tiny\, under-rehearsed conservatory. His older sister\, Julie\, staged living-room concerts where every child had to perform. Peter got the improvised shaker – a detergent bottle with dry rice. He has never fully recovered. He took piano lessons too. His Victorian teacher liked to rap his knuckles with a ruler until he cried\, so when she passed away\, Peter observed a respectful\, dry-eyed silence. Free at last\, he started playing songs he actually liked and found theatre at sixteen. Design became his career\, but only after ten years in London theatre\, where he acted\, sang\, built sets and worked backstage. Fast-forward forty-five years. Peter is now Head of Global Design at Tyson Foods. In his spare time\, he ambushes pianos in restaurants\, at weddings\, in hotel lobbies and once at Heathrow Terminal 3. Always uninvited. Always undeterred. Never once thrown off. Yet. He fell for Billy Joel\, Elton John and the Beatles at fifteen and never recovered from that either. His voice and playing may be a touch rusty\, but he can still belt out a good song. \nTorsten was born in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, the elder of two brothers. His parents were liberal\, creative and quietly united in the conviction that their sons would play the piano: a Maryland-born mother and a father whose bio you have\, in all likelihood\, just endured. Naturally\, there were lessons. Torsten and his brother\, Jensen\, poured more talent into escaping the piano than they ever spent at it. And for a glorious stretch\, the strategy held. Then\, somewhere between adolescence and adulthood\, came the discovery every teen dreads – the parents had been right from the very first scale. The musical awakening began modestly – playing the saxophone in the Lake Bluff Elementary School Band. At the University of Richmond\, he directed and produced for the Richmond Octaves a cappella group and sang in the Schola Cantorum choir\, before going on to write\, produce\, arrange\, perform\, record\, mix and edit his debut single\, “My Love.” It is on Spotify\, for anyone with the good sense to look it up. By day\, Torsten is Lead Medical Assistant at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute\, with medical school in his sight. By night\, his ambitions run wilder – sold-out arenas\, screaming fans and a rockstar’s life. \n

SUMMARY:Everything Can Be Art with Vee Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Each week\, children discover a world of mixed-media materials.
