SUMMARY:Cinderella: The Workshop Camp
DESCRIPTION:Cinderella: The Workshop Camp\nThis special session focuses on exploring and testing material for Gorton Drama Studio’s original adaptation of Cinderella. This work will later inform both the Gorton Two-Week Musical Theater Camp and the Four-week Musical Theater Camp later this summer. \nThroughout the week\, students will work closely with experienced teaching artists. Together\, they explore songs\, dialogue\, and choreography. Along the way\, they experiment with character\, storytelling\, and movement. Campers are encouraged to ask questions\, try bold ideas\, and take creative risks. As a result\, they gain insight into how a musical comes to life – from early drafts to performance-ready moments. Most importantly\, the focus stays on process\, creativity\, and ensemble collaboration rather than polish or perfection. \nThen\, at the end of the week\, the camp wraps up with a short\, informal presentation for family and friends. This low-key showing offers a glimpse into what the students have created together. Rather than a fully staged production\, it celebrates experimentation\, growth\, and shared discovery. \nOverall\, this camp is ideal for students who love creative exploration. It’s a great fit for those who want to deepen their performance skills and be a part of developing something new. \nPlease note: Participation in this camp does not affect casting or roles in any other Gorton Drama Studio programs\, including the two-week or four-week camps later in the summer. \nWhat Makes This Camp Special\n\nHands-on\, creative experience for young performers to help shape a brand-new adaptation of “Cinderella.”\nExplore and test material – including songs\, dialogue\, and choreography – that will be used in the Two-Week and Four-Week “Cinderella” Musical Theater Camps later in the summer.\nLow-pressure environment that encourages experimentation\, risk-taking\, and creative exploration.\nDiscover how a musical comes to life\, from first drafts to performance.\nCulminates in a short\, informal presentation for family and friends.\nCelebrates collaboration\, imagination\, and the joy of creating something new.\n\nWhat Campers Will Learn\n\nHow to explore character\, storytelling\, and movement in a musical theater setting.\nThe process of developing songs\, dialogue\, and choreography.\nHow to work collaboratively.\nConfidence in trying bold ideas and problem-solving.\nHow a musical comes together from concept to stage.\n\nCreative Team\n\nJeremy Kruse\, Producer & Playwright\nMadison Kisst\, Director\nMatt Mueller\, Song Writer – Broadway actor\, returning for his second year\, collaborating with Jeremy to create original music for the show\n\nStudents will receive both individual and group guidance throughout the process\, ensuring growth at every level. \nCamp Details:\nProject: “Cinderella”: The Workshop Camp\nPresentation Length: 30 minutes\nAges: 8–14\nPrice: $450\n \nDates: Monday\, June 8 to Friday\, June 12 \nDaily Schedule: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm \nPresentation: Friday\, June 12 \nPerformance in a Professional Theater\nThe presentation will take place in the 309-seat John and Nancy Hughes Theater\, a professional venue. \nThis is a promo video from last year’s production of Peter Pan Now. \nThis is a behind-the-scenes look at what we do at camp. \nThis one-week camp is perfect for curious\, creative young performers who love experimenting and exploring new ideas. SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up Your Teen to Draw & Paint with Joalida\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your 7 to 14-year-old up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach session includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water.  \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility. \nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.
