DESCRIPTION:Flute Lessons at the Gordon Center | Ages 9–99 \nDiscover the joy of playing the flute! Lessons are open to ages 9–99. All skill levels are welcome. Beginners can learn the fundamentals. Advanced students can refine their technique and prepare for auditions or competitions. Choose from 30-\, 45-\, or 60-minute weekly lessons. Students will have the opportunity to perform in an end-of-season spring studio recital. Community performance opportunities may also be available. Advanced students can prepare for local competitions. They can also audition for orchestra and band programs throughout the Chicagoland area. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory and completed graduate studies at Northwestern University with renowned flutist Walfrid Kujala. A prizewinner in numerous national competitions\, she was a semifinalist in the 2005 Jean-Pierre Rampal Flute Competition in Paris. Ms. Johnson is a dedicated educator who has served as a masterclass clinician and professor emeritus at Lone Star College Montgomery. She currently maintains a private flute studio in Lake Forest\, Illinois\, where she teaches students of all levels\, and serves as Executive Director of the Houston Youth Chamber Orchestra.

In Holiday on Broadway\, students will sing\, act\, dance\, and perform in a holiday-themed musical revue. Along the way\, they will bring classic Christmas stories\, favorite holiday songs\, and memorable characters to life. \nFirst\, students will build acting\, singing\, and performance skills. Then\, they will strengthen stage presence\, develop memorable characters\, and learn to work as a strong ensemble. Throughout the session\, performers will rehearse scenes\, songs\, and choreography while preparing for a polished production. \nStudents may perform selections inspired by Elf the Musical\, The Polar Express\, A Charlie Brown Christmas\, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!\, White Christmas\, and other holiday favorites. \nAs a Level Three class\, students take an active role in the rehearsal process. Over 24 hours of rehearsal across six weeks\, they will tackle more challenging material\, memorize scenes and songs\, and refine their performance skills. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

Creative activities keep young dancers engaged and excited to participate. They may twirl\, stretch\, leap\, and move through playful exercises designed just for their age. \nAlong the way\, dancers will build important physical skills. They will strengthen their balance\, flexibility\, coordination\, and body awareness. At the same time\, they will practice listening\, following directions\, and taking turns. \nMost importantly\, this class helps children build confidence. Every dancer can learn and participate at their own pace. We celebrate effort\, creativity\, and the excitement of trying something new. \nNo previous dance experience is needed. Tiny Tots Ballet is a wonderful introduction for children who love music and movement. It also gives curious beginners a comfortable place to discover dance. \nCome dance\, imagine\, and have fun! We can’t wait to share the joy of ballet with your little one. \nAges 2 – 4 \nMeet the Instructor\n \nWith 10 years of experience as an early childhood educator\, I love creating fun\, engaging experiences that help young children learn\, grow\, and build confidence. My dance journey includes studying ballet at the College of Lake County\, training at the Hubbard dance program in Chicago\, and performing on a pom dance team for a semi-professional football team in Lake County. I’ve also coached youth cheerleading and youth basketball\, giving me years of experience encouraging children through movement and teamwork. On weekends\, I work part-time as a Realtor\, allowing me to continue serving families in my community.

After spending years on stage as a musical theater performer and learning violin at his local elementary school\, Sheridan picked up an old guitar during his freshman year and never looked back.  Without formal lessons\, Liam spent hours learning\, practicing\, experimenting and quickly advanced to performing his first-ever live performance as a background rhythm guitarist at CROYA’s Battle of the Bands. \nThis was just the beginning for Sheridan.  After eventually deciding to go solo\, he quickly started to focus on his singing and acoustic guitar abilities.  His first ever performance as a lead country singer of a band was during an annual event\, Lake Forest Days\, just before his sophomore year of high school. This was a major event and fueled his desire to perform live and find his own sound. \nNot long after\, Sheridan took a leap and set his sights on Nashwood\, a local country music festival in Highwood\, Illinois.  He was invited to play his first ever solo acoustic gig at just 15 years old at 28 Mile Distilling Company.  After playing 3 sets that weekend\, Liam gained traction in the local community and began getting requests to play at private events\, fundraisers\, and other local venues.  Sheridan’s name quickly grew and he charted 63 shows in only his first year as an acoustic artist.  Venues included local joints like Duffer’s pub\, Billy Bricks\, Toadstool Pub\, Up North Axe and Tap\, The Nite ‘N Gale\, K-Solo Vintage\, and more! \nAt 16\, he started to explore songwriting.  Sheridan said that songwriting quickly became a new passion for him and he couldn’t stop.  “It was a new way of being able to express myself in a way I never thought was possible.”  His writing led him to audition for a prestigious songwriting camp at Nashville’s famed Country Music Hall of Fame.  He worked with amazing mentor Paulina Jayne\, an accomplished singer/songwriter in Nashville.  Together\, they co-wrote\, recorded\, and performed a song. Liam shared: “Paulina was so amazing to work with! I cannot even describe how much I learned from her in such a short period of time.” \nNow\, Sheridan’s goal now is to share his music and story with the world. Acoustically-driven\, Liam’s lyrics are wrought with pure emotion and raw experiences that weave his stories together and strike a chord with all who listen.  Inspired by the likes of Noah Kahan\, Tyler Childers\, Lizzy McAlpine\, and Zach Bryan\, Liam brings a warm\, country folk\, and emotion-filled tone to every stage.
