DESCRIPTION:Lockers\, Sneakers & Doodles\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

Every year\, Halloween’s most famous characters gather to compete for the title of the year’s biggest Halloween star. While the audience enjoys the show\, the real fun happens backstage. Big personalities clash. Friendly rivalries grow. Plus\, unexpected mishaps keep everyone laughing. \nThroughout this musical theater production\, students will build their acting\, singing\, and dancing skills. They will rehearse from an original script. They will create memorable characters\, learn songs and choreography\, and explore comedic acting. Along the way\, they will work together to bring this funny Halloween story to life. Every student will have the chance to shine through featured roles\, solos\, duets\, small-group scenes\, and ensemble numbers. \nPerformance\nThe session ends with a fully staged performance for family and friends. Unlike a Level One Demonstration or Level Two Presentation\, the Level Three Performance focuses on memorization\, strong character work\, storytelling\, and polished stage performance. This after school art class will not only provide an incredible outlet for self-expression but also help students to develop motor skills\, visual-spatial skills\, and problem-solving skills. Each week a different artist will be featured to inspire students to create their own unique piece of art. This class can get messy\, so please wear old clothing or bring an apron/smock. For grades K – 3rd \nCarole Pearlman’s lifelong fascination with creativity began as a child\, in a neighborhood art class\, where making art in the backyard was the only agenda for an entire summer. Many art classes later Carole completed a BFA in painting\, a MEd in Educational Therapy\, and an MA in Developmental Psychology. Integrating the disciplines of art\, education\, and psychology Carole developed The Joy of Creativity Art program. Carole works as a facilitator of creativity with students ages 4 to 84! Through her teaching\, research\, and daily practice\, she believes that being creative is an essential part of a balanced life. Carole is a professional artist and certified teacher.

The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. DESCRIPTION:Build a Mini Woodland House in this fun\, hands-on workshop designed for older kids who love to create. Over two sessions\, young makers will design and build a mini woodland house from start to finish. Along the way\, they’ll practice problem-solving\, use their imagination\, and develop basic woodworking and crafting skills.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFirst\, participants will sand and assemble their miniature house using small pieces of wood and driftwood. Then they’ll bring their creation to life with paint and other decorative details. Every house will be unique and reflect each child’s creativity. \nNext\, during the second session\, students will mount their finished house on a sturdy base. They’ll also create a charming woodland landscape using natural materials such as moss\, rocks\, sticks\, and bark. Finally\, they’ll add whimsical finishing touches\, including a tiny twine clothesline and other found objects\, to complete their magical scene. \nBy the end of the workshop\, each child will build a mini woodland house to take home and proudly display. This beginner-friendly class encourages creativity\, builds confidence\, and inspires a deeper appreciation for nature through imaginative\, hands-on making. \nAges 9 – 12

DESCRIPTION:Let your little artist dive into the colorful world of mosaics! In this hands-on workshop\, children will design and create their very own mosaic coaster from start to finish. \nFirst\, young artists will choose from a variety of bright\, kid-friendly mosaic tiles. Then\, they’ll arrange different colors and shapes to create a pattern they love. They can mix\, match\, experiment\, and let their imaginations lead the way. \nOur instructor will guide children through each step of the mosaic-making process. Kids will learn how to arrange tiles and bring their ideas to life. They’ll also discover the basics of mosaic art while working at a comfortable pace. \nAs they create\, children will build important skills. Picking up and placing small tiles strengthens fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Planning a design encourages problem-solving and concentration. Plus\, choosing colors\, shapes\, and patterns gives every child a chance to express their creativity. \nThere’s no right or wrong way to design a mosaic. Each child can make something completely unique. This supportive workshop encourages kids to try new ideas\, make creative choices\, and feel proud of what they create. \nAt the end of class\, every young artist will take home a colorful handmade coaster. Whether you’re ready to belt out every chorus or simply enjoy singing along with friends\, this is your chance to celebrate some of music’s greatest hits together. \nPeter and Torsten’s musical journey spans two generations\, two countries and countless hours at the piano. Together\, they’ll lead an evening celebrating the songs they’ve loved for years – from Elton John’s ballads to Billy Joel classics and Beatles favorites. Expect great music\, a few stories and plenty of chances to sing along. \nThe evening lasts about 45–60 minutes\, followed by refreshments and time to connect with fellow music lovers. No experience is necessary\, and there’s no future commitment – just a chance to share music in a welcoming\, low-pressure setting. \n\n\nGood to Know\n\nOpen to all ages – come on your own or bring family and friends\nNo singing experience needed – if you love these songs\, you’re ready\nLyrics will be provided\nLed by father-and-son musicians Peter and Torsten Borowski\nThe evening concludes with refreshments and conversation\n\nMeet Our Musical Leaders\nPeter was born in London\, one of six children raised by a strict Polish father and a Cockney mother who believed childhood was best spent holding a musical instrument. Piano\, guitar\, violin\, oboe – the house ran like a tiny\, under-rehearsed conservatory. His older sister\, Julie\, staged living-room concerts where every child had to perform. Peter got the improvised shaker – a detergent bottle with dry rice. He has never fully recovered. He took piano lessons too. His Victorian teacher liked to rap his knuckles with a ruler until he cried\, so when she passed away\, Peter observed a respectful\, dry-eyed silence. Free at last\, he started playing songs he actually liked and found theatre at sixteen. Design became his career\, but only after ten years in London theatre\, where he acted\, sang\, built sets and worked backstage. Fast-forward forty-five years. Peter is now Head of Global Design at Tyson Foods. In his spare time\, he ambushes pianos in restaurants\, at weddings\, in hotel lobbies and once at Heathrow Terminal 3. Always uninvited. Always undeterred. Never once thrown off. Yet. He fell for Billy Joel\, Elton John and the Beatles at fifteen and never recovered from that either. His voice and playing may be a touch rusty\, but he can still belt out a good song. \nTorsten was born in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, the elder of two brothers. His parents were liberal\, creative and quietly united in the conviction that their sons would play the piano: a Maryland-born mother and a father whose bio you have\, in all likelihood\, just endured. Naturally\, there were lessons. Torsten and his brother\, Jensen\, poured more talent into escaping the piano than they ever spent at it. And for a glorious stretch\, the strategy held. Then\, somewhere between adolescence and adulthood\, came the discovery every teen dreads – the parents had been right from the very first scale. The musical awakening began modestly – playing the saxophone in the Lake Bluff Elementary School Band. At the University of Richmond\, he directed and produced for the Richmond Octaves a cappella group and sang in the Schola Cantorum choir\, before going on to write\, produce\, arrange\, perform\, record\, mix and edit his debut single\, “My Love.” It is on Spotify\, for anyone with the good sense to look it up. By day\, Torsten is Lead Medical Assistant at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute\, with medical school in his sight. By night\, his ambitions run wilder – sold-out arenas\, screaming fans and a rockstar’s life. \n

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Afternoons with Mr. V\nAttention kids!  This fall\, join award-winning music educator and composer Bill Vaananen for 8 educational and inspirational Wednesday afternoon sessions of exciting songs and activities.  Classes will wrap singing and movement into a tapestry of history\, geography\, and adventure!   A major component of the program will be  Mr. V’s epic work “The Song of Hiawatha”\, a musical tribute to the North American Indian.  A multi-media performance of the entire 30-minute “song” will take place for parents and guests on the final day of class\, Wed. Nov. 18 at 4:30 p.m.  Older elementary kids (2nd-5th) will find the music especially exciting and inspiring!  \n\nAges: 5-11\nPrice: $400\nWednesdays\, 9/30 to 11/18\nTime: 4:00 – 5:15\n\nMeet the GDS Faculty\n \nBill Vaananen is an award-winning music educator and composer who has taught and directed elementary-aged students for over 45 years. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama.
