Together\, they explore songs\, dialogue\, and choreography. Along the way\, they experiment with character\, storytelling\, and movement. Campers are encouraged to ask questions\, try bold ideas\, and take creative risks. As a result\, they gain insight into how a musical comes to life – from early drafts to performance-ready moments. Most importantly\, the focus stays on process\, creativity\, and ensemble collaboration rather than polish or perfection. \nThen\, at the end of the week\, the camp wraps up with a short\, informal presentation for family and friends. This low-key showing offers a glimpse into what the students have created together. Rather than a fully staged production\, it celebrates experimentation\, growth\, and shared discovery. \nOverall\, this camp is ideal for students who love creative exploration. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. Jeremy also teaches privately\, one on one  www.jeremykruse.com and www.jeremykruseactingtraining.com  \n  \n \nMadison Kisst is a professional actor\, director\, and educator with extensive training in physical and classical theatre\, voice and movement\, and devising. Recently\, she has served as the Fight/Intimacy director for Middle Tennessee State University’s production of Clue: On Stage and Nashville Repertory Theatre’s production of Sister Act. She has her BA in Theatre Arts from California State University Chico and Master of Fine Arts in Performance from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Madison is a member of the performance faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Middle Tennessee State University. \n  \n  \n  \nMatt Mueller is an actor\, musician\, former pirate\, and part-time wizard. Outside GDS his most recent credits include Harry Potter and Cursed Child\, and he’s excited to be back with the wonderful storytellers of Gorton Drama Studio after last summer in Neverland!! \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCarla Garippo\, dance teacher/choreographer\, received her professional dance training from Ruth Page Center for the Arts and was a principal dancer of The Ruth Page Civic Ballet Company of Chicago. She is fluent in Ballet\, Jazz\, Tap\, Hip-Hop\, Modern\, Lyrical\, Contemporary\, Poms\, Pointe\, Musical Theatre\, Stretch/Conditioning and Character. Some of Carla’s credits include: The Chicago Tribune Charities production of “The Nutcracker ” at The Arie Crown Theatre\, Dirty Dancing\, Carnaval at The Victor Hotel\, Dance Chicago\, MTVs Sweet 16\, as well as various music videos and concerts nationwide. With guidance from trained teen volunteers\, kids practice pedestrian safety by riding tricycles through a miniature town complete with streets\, sidewalks\, stop signs\, and a working traffic signal. Campers also build confidence by memorizing an important phone number\, singing fun safety songs\, and learning the Safety Town Pledge. \nSafety Town Majors takes place at Gorton Center Tuesday\, June 9 through Friday\, June 12 from 1–4 pm\, rain or shine. This one-of-a-kind summer program invites high school students to explore the exciting world of video storytelling through a hands-on\, collaborative experience. \nOver 1 week\, participants will move through every stage of pre-production. Working in teams\, they’ll brainstorm story ideas\, write scripts\, plan shoots\, and prepare production materials. With support from media professionals and local alumni of the High School Media Collective\, students will gain real-world insight into how stories are brought to life on screen. \nIn addition to technical training\, students will walk away with a completed film project for their portfolio\, stronger communication skills\, and the confidence that comes from creating something meaningful. The program fosters not just creativity but also collaboration\, resilience\, and problem-solving—skills essential to any creative career. \nOpen to high school students ages 14 to 18\, this experience is perfect for beginners and seasoned storytellers alike. Gorton Center’s customizable camps offer the perfect solution for busy families and curious kids! With engaging camp sessions available in both the morning and afternoon\, you can mix and match programs to fit your child’s interests and create a dynamic full-day experience. \nTo make things even easier\, Gorton offers a supervised lunchtime option for campers attending both a morning and afternoon session. Our friendly and attentive staff will oversee campers during lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (or until 1:30 PM\, depending on the camp schedule)\, providing a safe and relaxed environment where kids can unwind\, eat\, and socialize with friends between activities. This convenient lunchtime care is available for just $20 per week. \nPlease note that lunch is not provided. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama. SUMMARY:EV Junior Fashion and Sewing Camp
DESCRIPTION:Calling all future fashion designers! This exciting camp invites young fashionistas to explore their love of sewing and style in a fun\, supportive space. If your child loves colors\, fabrics\, and creativity\, then this is the perfect place to start. \nThroughout the week\, students jump right into designing. First\, they create small-scale outfits on their very own mini mannequins. Then\, they design custom jewelry to match their looks. In addition\, they enjoy fun fashion-themed games that spark imagination and teamwork. They also design stylish paper doll outfits and experiment with different patterns and textures. \nWith step-by-step guidance from our EV Fine Arts instructor\, students build confidence as they learn real sewing skills. They practice using a sewing machine and\, most importantly\, they sew a custom outfit they can proudly wear home at the end of the week. Every project encourages creativity\, independence\, and self-expression. \nAt the end of the week\, excitement fills the room during our “Fashion Show Friday.” Students walk the runway and proudly showcase their handmade creations for family and friends. It’s a joyful celebration of everything they designed and created! \nPlease note that students enjoy two snack breaks during each 3-hour session\, so be sure to pack a snack. No experience is needed. This camp welcomes all youth ages 4–6 who are ready to create\, design\, and shine! \n \nElena Victoria is a local fashion designer who has gone on to find her true passion in teaching youth how to design and sew their own clothing and jewelry through her program\, EV Fine Arts. DESCRIPTION:New Media Summer Stories Experience: A Filmmaking Program for Teens\nCalling all aspiring filmmakers\, storytellers\, and creatives! This one-of-a-kind summer program invites high school students to explore the exciting world of video storytelling through a hands-on\, collaborative experience. \nOver 1 week\, participants will move through every stage of pre-production. Working in teams\, they’ll brainstorm story ideas\, write scripts\, plan shoots\, and prepare production materials. With support from media professionals and local alumni of the High School Media Collective\, students will gain real-world insight into how stories are brought to life on screen. \nIn addition to technical training\, students will walk away with a completed film project for their portfolio\, stronger communication skills\, and the confidence that comes from creating something meaningful. The program fosters not just creativity but also collaboration\, resilience\, and problem-solving—skills essential to any creative career. \nOpen to high school students ages 14 to 18\, this experience is perfect for beginners and seasoned storytellers alike. DESCRIPTION:Camp registration opens on Monday\, February 2 at 10 am\nJewelry Design Camp: Create\, Shine & Showcase!\nGet ready to sparkle! In this hands-on jewelry design camp\, young creators design and make their own unique pieces from start to finish. \nThroughout the week\, campers learn from experienced young fashion designers. Instructors guide them as they work with polymer clay to create necklaces\, bracelets\, earrings\, and more. Campers mix colors\, shape designs\, and add personal details. Along the way\, they build real design skills and express their creativity. \nAt the end of the week\, campers show off their work in a fun fashion show. Family and friends are invited to celebrate their creativity and hard work. \nEach camper completes at least five original pieces to take home. The camp fee includes all materials and supplies. This camp is perfect for budding designers and hands-on makers alike. It blends fun\, fashion\, and artistic expression. \nNo prior experience is required. Just bring your imagination and enthusiasm! \nFor those students who are looking to attend more than one week of camp\, please note that each week will feature a different series of projects as well as new clay colors and designs to choose from.  \nAges 6 – 13 \n \nElena Victoria is a local fashion designer who has gone on to find her true passion in teaching youth how to design and sew their own clothing and jewelry through her program\, EV Fine Arts. It dates all the way back to eighth grade when he walked into the television studio at Gordon Tech High School. Seeing the lights and cameras lit a fire in him and he chose to pursue an A/V career. It has been a long and winding road for Rich. He studied at Indiana University and worked as a reporter for the Fine Arts/NPR radio station while also working as a videographer for the IU Sports Information Department. After college\, Rich worked at the Chicago Board of Trade as a clerk\, Poplar Creek Music Theatre as the House Manager and then worked as an on-air talent and producer at WCKG and WXCD radio stations in Chicago. Rich started work in the A/V department at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates where he eventually headed the department before landing at the Gorton Community Center. Rich has a son in college and likes to spend his spare time playing golf or tennis and other sports or playing guitar and listening to music and attending concerts. \n  \nYou Belong Here\nSing at Gorton is a welcoming community sing series designed to bring people together in a fun\, informal way. Each event is themed around a different style of music\, led by local hosts and open to everyone — no experience or vocal knowledge necessary. These one-off gatherings last about 45–60 minutes and end with refreshments\, making it easy to join in\, connect and sing.

With a little patience and creativity\, you can make just about anything! From simple patterns to playful decorations\, the possibilities are endless. \nFor this workshop\, bring a canvas or denim item to personalize. A tote bag\, jeans\, jacket\, hat\, or pouch all work wonderfully. Then\, Maggie will provide the wool\, felting needles\, and step-by-step instructions you need to add a pop of wooly whimsy to your favorite piece. \nFirst\, you’ll learn the basics of needle felting. Next\, you’ll experiment with colors\, textures\, and simple designs. Finally\, you’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind creation that is both charming and handmade. \nSo\, if you enjoy trying something new\, this class is for you! During this four day sewing camp sewers will stitch up a variety of 4th of July themed projects. We will make a cute 4th of July themed apron\, tote bag to take to the fireworks show\, and a quilted pillow. This camp will be led by Ciao Bella Sewing. \nAll supplies\, including fabric\, sewing machines\, and sewing notions are provided. It is SEW much fun to sew and create. Students can bring their own sewing machine or use the provided sewing machines.
