It is designed for beginners\, but it also supports artists who want to refresh and strengthen their skills. Pencil drawing is both accessible and expressive. Through this class\, you will gain confidence and learn techniques to create drawings that feel realistic and engaging. \nEach session has two main parts. First\, you will practice drawing what you see. To do this\, we will use observational exercises\, often with simple still life setups. Step by step\, you’ll train your eye to notice shapes\, proportions\, light\, and shadow more accurately. \nNext\, you will move from practice into a finished drawing. In this second part\, you’ll learn how to plan a composition\, layer shading\, and add detail and texture. These steps will help bring your artwork to life. \nAs the course continues\, you will build a strong foundation. You’ll grow more comfortable with line\, form\, value\, and perspective – the essential elements of drawing. \nExperienced Artists Welcome\nIf you already have some experience\, you can join too. They are artistic interpretations of plants. He notices shapes\, light\, and shadows in the ground around him. He often focuses on a single detail – an individual leaf\, a flower\, or a small fragment of earth. In this way\, he brings those details to life. He has worked with colored pencil for several years and has taught the art for the past three. \nPhilip is currently teaching online from his home since March. He teaches online color pencil classes for other art studios/galleries\, private classes and Facebook demos. He has published two books featuring his art and techniques and has done a number of outdoor shows\, group and individual exhibitions. \nPhilip’s process of making a rendering with the detail that he wants to have requires a significant amount of time. Sometimes he uses other media\, such as ink\, watercolors or pastels.\n Philip is a member of the Color Pencil Society of America\, Grayslake Arts Alliance and the Lake County Art League. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

The Festive Season Reset workshop invites you to slow down\, reset\, and make more room for joy\, peace\, and connection. \nInstead of creating another traditional holiday checklist\, you’ll make a list with no shopping and no chores. This list focuses entirely on you. What brings you joy and helps you feel peaceful? What traditions make the season meaningful? Are there things you can do to bring more lightness and intention into your December? \nThrough guided reflection\, you’ll discover simple ways to create a holiday season that feels fulfilling rather than overwhelming. You’ll identify the moments\, experiences\, and practices that help you feel present and connected. \nThen\, take time to recharge. Practice guided meditations designed to encourage serenity and restore your energy. Explore gentle energy work that can help settle your nervous system and bring a greater sense of calm. Give yourself permission to step away from the holiday rush and focus on how you want to feel this season. \nYou’ll leave feeling refreshed\, peaceful\, and ready to approach December with a new perspective. SUMMARY:CPR\, AED and Optional First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:* THIS IS A HYBRID COURSE!  1.5 or 4.5 HOURS ONLINE @ HOME AND 2.5 HOURS IN-PERSON!\nThis blended learning style Basic CPR and AED class with optional First Aid is a must have basic skill everyone should learn. This class will not satisfy a BLS requirement. You will learn how to perform life-saving skills such as rescue breathing\, CPR\, and managing an obstructed airway for all ages. Also\, learn how to use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). \nThis course is designed by the Health Safety Institute\, a worldwide leader in CPR\, AED and First Aid emergency care training programs. Students will receive a certification valid for two years\, upon successful completion of the course. Class materials include a digital reference book and digital certification card issued upon successful completion of the in-person skills class. \nONLINE\nThe on-line prerequisite class is self-paced. It is best to use a PC to complete. We will send you the link for the online portion once we reach our registration minimum. If you have not received your learning link by 1 week prior to class\, please contact instructor (Tanya 847-989-7056). CPR and AED only will take approximately 1.5  hour.  CPR\, AED\, and optional First Aid will take up to 4.5 hours. The instructor will send you an email with the class options. A learning link can not be assigned until you choose your option. \nIN-PERSON (At Gorton Center)  \nIn-Person skills class is the same for both options and will take approximately 2.5 hours. Wear comfortable clothing. Most of the practice will take place on the floor. A kneeling pad is provided but students may also want to bring a yoga mat or towel to lie on floor. Please inform instructor prior to class if accommodations are needed to explore options. Students must be able to properly compress the chest of the manikin to successfully complete the class. \nAges 12+ \n*Please reach out to Libby Johnson with any questions!
