SUMMARY:Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal
DESCRIPTION:Location:\nON ZOOM\n\nNote: Event start time is Central Time (CT). \n \n\nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! We are giving away copies of Punished for Dreaming to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nIn Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal\, Bettina L. Love\, Ph.D. argues forcefully that\, with the release of the 1983 report “A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform\,” Ronald Reagan’s presidency ushered in a War on Black Children\, pathologizing and penalizing them in concert with the War on Drugs. New policies punished schools with policing\, closure\, and loss of funding in the name of reform\, as white savior\, egalitarian efforts increasingly allowed private interests to infiltrate the system. These changes implicated children of color\, and Black children in particular\, as low performing\, making it all too easy to turn a blind eye to their disproportionate conviction and incarceration. \nIn this prequel to The New Jim Crow\, Dr. Love\, the William F. Russell Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, serves up a blistering account of four decades of educational reform through the lens of the people who lived it. Punished for Dreaming lays bare the devastating effect on 25 Black Americans caught in the intersection of economic gain and racist ideology. In a recent interview\, Dr. Love stated that “these interviews are more than data points or individual grievances about a bad school experience; they represent generations of pain\, trauma\, and loss inflicted on Black children by America’s public school system.” With input from leading U.S. economists\, Dr. Love concludes the book with a road map for repair\, arguing for reparations with transformation for all children at its core. \nDr. Love will be in conversation with Ganae McAlpin-Toney\, the Director of Equity for Evanston Township High School D202 and the facilitator for the second-year induction program. Ms. McAlpin-Toney is a mother of two\, educator\, coach\, and facilitator dedicated to fostering relationships among people of different races\, socio-economic status\, and sexuality. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Salsarobics
DESCRIPTION:Join Esther Gutierrez Sloan for a fun workout that happens each Friday! The major distinction of this program is that the joy\, fun\, and discovery are ongoing!! \nThe option of varying intensity levels from low to moderate to high is a choice that is ongoing throughout the class\, while moving to a myriad of enticing Latin\, Caribbean\, Spaniard and African beats. Low-impact and high-impact options are also presented to choose from. \n-Esther offers an experience that averages  4000-4200 steps with varying degrees of intensity. \n-Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology is used to maintain proper postural alignment and ensure muscular conditioning. \n-Pheripheral Heart Action (PHA) training methodology is used to work with aerobic intensity which is  optional and challenged based on the level that the participant chooses to execute the rhythmic steps \n-Using inline motion protocol\, moving from one end of the room to the other end makes the participant effectively and functionally use steps\, while working on balance and coordination by changing direction {lateral\, diagonal\, front\, backward). \nProprioceptive Neurological Facilitation (PNF) stretching is performed at the end of the session. \nSALSArobics was created by Colombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan.  Esther has performed SALSArobics on national television and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida and New York. \nEsther has led SALSArobics classes\, exhibitions\, workshops and presentations at fitness conventions\, health clubs\, schools\, fundraising events\, ethnic festivals\, internationally and nationally. \nEsther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010 in recognition of her pioneering efforts to introduce authentic Latin rhythms and dance steps into aerobic exercise in 1989 when she created SALSArobics.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi With Ken Ning
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for Gorton’s Tai Chi class and join Ken Ning each Saturday to learn and practice Tai Chi. Ken’s Tai Chi class is open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nTai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:FAN: Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nAdvice | Behavior | Character | Civics | Culture | Empathy | Ethics | Grief | Inequality | Leadership | Mental Health | Morality | Philosophy | Psychology | Race | Relationships | Religion | Social Justice | Trauma | Well Being\nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Failures of Forgiveness from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Prof. Cherry and Mr. Stewart that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page. \n \nMyisha Cherry\, Ph.D.’s investigation of forgiveness began after the mass shooting at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston\, South Carolina\, when some who had lost loved ones forgave what seemed unforgiveable. She was troubled by observers who focused on this “inspiring” response over the racial hatred that led to this tragedy. As associate professor of philosophy at the University of California\, Riverside\, where she also directs the Emotion and Society Lab\, she was moved to pin down the potential and pitfalls of how we make amends—to provide careful\, moral prescriptions. \nProf. Cherry’s new book\, Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better is a reckoning with widespread\, wrongheaded beliefs. She examines how forgiveness can go wrong in families\, between friends\, at work\, in the media\, and in politics. Prof. Cherry addresses forgiveness and race\, cancelling versus forgiving\, forgiving yourself\, and more. She argues that we can forgive and still be angry; there can be good reasons not to forgive; and forgiving a wrong without tackling root causes solves nothing. \nProviding new pathways to think about the ways we expect and react to wrongdoing\, Prof. Cherry offers in-depth advice and takeaways\, including 1) Forgiveness entails forgivers\, withholders\, and requestors\, not just villains and victims; 2) Forgiveness is not an action or a process\, but rather a set of moral practices; 3) It can end with relief\, release\, or reconciliation; and 4) Forgiveness will not save us but changing our relationship with it will get us closer to saving ourselves. \nProf. Cherry is the author of The Case for Rage: Why Anger Is Essential to Anti-Racist Struggle and UnMuted: Conversations on Prejudice\, Oppression\, and Social Justice\, which draws on her popular podcast UnMute. She will be in conversation with Danté Stewart\, is a theologian\, essayist\, cultural critic\, and author of Shoutin’ In The Fire: An American Epistle. Mr. Stewart’s work has appeared in the Atlantic\, New York Times\, the Washington Post\, TIME\, ESPN’s Andscape\, Oxford American\, Sojourners\, NPR\, CNN\, MSNBC\, and more. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+.
