Gorton CenterHave you ever wanted to write a song but didn’t know where to begin? Or maybe you’ve dabbled in songwriting and want to deepen your craft? Whether you’re a novice or an experienced songwriter, this introductory course is designed to meet you where you are—no formal music training required.
Led by acclaimed songwriter Pierce Pettis, this hands-on workshop will guide participants through the fundamental aspects of songwriting, including:
Defining your purpose and goals as a songwriter
Music composition and melody development
Lyric writing and storytelling
Finding creative inspiration
Co-writing techniques and collaboration
Song critique and the editing process
The two-hour session is designed as a launchpad for your songwriting journey, offering a solid foundation and practical tools to help you grow. While the workshop will provide an overview of each topic, participants will also gain exclusive access to a wealth of additional online materials, including articles, charts, diagrams, and lessons—allowing for self-paced study and practice after the session.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to download class materials or review digital links provided prior to the session. Printed copies of the materials are also welcome.
Pierce is a Compass Records Group recording artist, previously on Windham Hill/High Street. He began his career at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama. He’s also a former staff writer at Polygram and Universal Music Publishing in Nashville, with songs covered by Garth Brooks, Art Garfunkel, Joan Baez, David Wilcox, Dar Williams, Tim O’Brien, Dion and many others.
