Science on the Screen: The Martian
THE FILM SERIES AT GORTON presents Science on thE SCREen® THE MARTIAN WITH PANEL ON SPACE EXPLORATION
“Every human being has a basic instinct: to help each other out. If a hiker gets lost in the mountains, people will coordinate a search. If a train crashes, people will line up to give blood. If an earthquake levels a city, people all over the world will send emergency supplies. This is so fundamentally human that it’s found in every culture without exception. Yes, there are assholes who just don’t care, but they’re massively outnumbered by the people who do.”
Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, as well as winning several Golden Globes, you won’t want to miss this spacefaring adventure!
Please stay after the film for a panel discussion with Dr. Mark Hammergren & Dr. Shane Larson!
Mark Hammergren, PhD, is an astronomer at the Adler Planetarium. His research interests include asteroids, comets, meteorites, and their effects on life on Earth, and the history and sociology of the flying saucer phenomenon. He directs the Astro-Science Workshop, a summer program for science-interested high school students currently in its 49th year, and cofounded the Adler’s Far Horizons citizen space exploration team.
Dr. Shane Larson is currently a Research Associate Professor at Northwestern University and the Associate Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA). When he is not pursuing his personal interests, it’s a good bet he’ll be doing something related to physics, astronomy, and communicating science to the broader world.
THE FILM SERIES AT GORTON presents:
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.
Based on the novel, The Martian by Andy Weir.
Directed by Ridley Scott.
Starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain.

SCIENCE ON THE SCREEN:
The Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Science on Screen® series has enhanced film and scientific literacy with this popular program, which launched at the Coolidge in 2005. In partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and its pioneering nationwide film program, the Coolidge has expanded Science on Screen to 72 cinemas nationwide.
Throughout the academic year, SoS creatively pairs screenings of classic, cult, science fiction, and documentary films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science and technology. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages popular culture audiences—from the function of the amygdala in the zombie brains of Night of the Living Dead to how far epidemiology has come since The Andromeda Strain.
