Oliver! Part of the From Stage to Screen series
Co-presented with the Citadel Theatre
Annie and Oliver!— both highly popular and critically acclaimed musicals telling the story of triumphing orphans. Be sure to take your family to see Annie on Citadel’s stage and then come to Gorton for Oliver!, winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
“Please sir, I want some more.”
Inspired by Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, this film version of the musical hit does a masterful job of telling its story almost exclusively through song and dance. After being sold to a mortician, 9-year-old orphan Oliver Twist runs away and meets a group of boys trained to be pickpockets led by the artful Dodger and masterminded by the criminal Fagin. When Oliver’s intended mark, Mr. Brownlow, takes pity on the lad and offers him a home, Fagin’s henchman Bill Sikes plots to kidnap the boy to keep him from talking.
Directed by Carol Reed
Starring Mark Lester, Ron Moody & Shani Wallis
Following the film will be a talk back with guests from Citadel’s production of Annie— to be announced shortly.
From Stage to Screen is curated with Citadel Theatre’s Artistic Director Scott Phelps and in conjunction with their theatrical season, Gorton programs films similar in theme or from the same artist as productions on Citadel’s stage. This series is aimed at crossing the boundaries from stage to screen. After each screening there will be a talk back featuring guests from Citadel’s productions connecting the shows.
