Adult Music Theory/Composition 101: Foundations Monday, June 20

Adult Music Theory/Composition 101: Foundations

Composition 101 is geared towards those new to the world of instrumental improvisation and composition as well as for those of all levels of experience. In this course, we’ll begin to look at music theory in a way that is directly transferable to writing. How do you use a scale to explore both harmony and melody? How can theory turn your instrument (or your mind!) into a playground? Within this process, we’ll use small composition prompts to begin testing out writing for ourselves. Basic knowledge of an instrument is encouraged.

This class runs on Mondays, June 20 – July 18 (NO CLASS JULY 4), 11:30am – 12:30pm

Kacie is a musician, songwriter, and educator newly based in Lake Forest. Aside from running her private teaching studio, Kacie founded, performs, and writes with Albion West – a folk/jazz/classical artist collective based in Chicago, IL (www.albionwest.com). Her goal within her own work, as well as her stance on teaching, is to intertwine the ideas of theory, technique, and repertoire with the expression of self. She holds a degree in Commercial Music from Indiana University (www.kacieswierk.com).
