How To Write A Memoir With David Rutter-Topic 3 via Zoom

“How to Write a Memoir” is a seminar by veteran author and journalist David Rutter. You’ll learn what it takes to research, write and publish your story, and have fun doing it. Nearly everyone eventually longs to tell a life story in a memoir, but many are thwarted because they don’t know how to do it. Rutter reveals the nuts and bolts of the process, from finding your personal narrative, interviewing relatives for background and then how to put it all together. *This class is virtual via zoom.
Time: 7:00-8:30PM

Topic 3:  Building Bridges (Monday, January 11)
Writers often build 20 good ideas in separate, independent paragraphs, but are less effective in connecting ideas. How does one idea lead to another and how do you build “word bridges” that connect ideas into a seamless whole? How to write in smooth, more thoughtful patterns.

UPCOMING SEMINARS AND DATES:
Topic 4: Finding Your Voice (Monday, February 8)

Every writer is concerned the “voice” of their words does not sound real. It does not sound like I sound? Is it supposed to sound like me? How do you find that sound for your writing, and how can you tell you are tapping into your experiences? Find your “voice.” And learn to speak in it as a writer.

Topic 5: I’d Like To Be Funny (Monday, March 8)

You tell jokes, and friends say you have a great sense of humor. But you have a hard time translating that sense of humor into your writing. It doesn’t sound right. Let’s talk about several dozen ways you can use the language to be funny. How to be droll without the drool. Maybe your friends aren’t really your friends.

Participants will receive a link to the archived video memoir and access to them for six months. Pre-registration within 24 hours before the seminar is mandatory as David will email “memoir writing samples” to each participant in advance of the seminars. The samples will be used as discussion points (David has about 1,000 of his own published memoir samples from which to choose).

Gorton Community Center will take and may use photos and videos from this event for its promotional purposes. Your attendance indicates your consent to the above.
