Expressions Through Drumming (Drum Circle)
THE OCTOBER 5 CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED. PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE NEXT CLASS ON OCTOBER 12!
This class runs on Saturdays, October 5, 12 and 19 from 10:00am – 11:00am. There will be a performance from 11:15am – 12:15pm on October 19th!
Intended for Ages 8 and up!
Come join the drum circle, whether you have experience or not! We all have rhythm (our heartbeat can testify to this) and we all need to be heard. The purpose of a drum circle is to break down any social barriers and bring people together by having a conversation through the voice of our drums. Drum circles teach us how to effectively communicate with one another through the power of listening and supporting one another in conversation/life (i.e. not playing too soft or too loud, not doing all the “talking”, meeting people where they are at, etc.).
In this session, you will learn how to properly play each drum and/or piece(s) of percussion (listed below), the origin of each instrument, and participate in fun interactive drum lessons and activities that are used to help everyone effectively have a “conversation” within the drum circle. The drum circle will be facilitated by Andrew Moreno who has been drumming for over 20 years, and has learned many different genres ranging from rock, pop, hip-hop to jazz fusion, African and world music.
Drums that will be included in the drum circle are: djembe, darabuka, doumbek, cowbell, block, bongos, tambourine, and more. If you have your own hand drum or percussion you are more than welcome to bring it with you. It is encouraged for parents to attend with their children in having a conversation together through the voice of drums.
Gorton Community Center will take and may use photos and videos from this event for its promotional purposes. Your attendance indicates your consent to the above.
Class Refund and Cancellation Policy: Refunds will only be given up to one week prior to the first week of class of any session. (The refund period for some classes, which require advanced reservations or purchase of materials, may be more limited.) Cancellations will incur a $5 handling fee for programs costing under $100 and a 10% handling fee for programs with fees of $100 or more. If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified, and a full refund will be given.
If this class does not meet the minimum participation requirement, you will be notified of the cancellation within one week of the start date.
