Musical Theater Camp High School Intern

Gorton Drama Studio, part of Gorton Center in Lake Forest, IL, is dedicated to providing a fun and inspirational environment where actors of all ages can express themselves creatively through both entertaining and artistic theater and film. Our building has multiple classrooms, a black box theater and The John and Nancy Hughes Theater, a 309-seat state-of-the-art facility.

Are you a high school student with a passion for theater, music, and mentoring young talents? If so, we invite you to be a part of an extraordinary experience as a Camp Intern at Gorton Drama Studio’s “Queen: We Will Rock You” Summer Musical Theater Camp. This exciting opportunity, spanning four weeks, comes with a compensation of $575.

As a Camp Intern, your responsibilities will include overseeing and managing a group of enthusiastic campers aged 7 to 14, fostering a positive and inclusive environment. You will also assist in conducting acting, singing, and dancing classes, contributing to the development of both basic and advanced performance skills. Moreover, you’ll play a vital role in the preparation and execution of the spectacular production of “Queen: We Will Rock You,” supporting campers in auditions, rehearsals, and bringing the magic of Queen’s music to life on stage.

Our summer camp, guided by industry experts Jeremy Kruse and Madison Kisst, caters to both seasoned performers and beginners. The program encompasses a range of activities, including acting, singing, and dancing classes, auditions for the musical, rehearsals, and five live performances at The John and Nancy Hughes Theater. The camp concludes with a celebratory cast party, creating lasting memories for all participants.

NOTE: All interns are required to be at camp every day, all day. Permission to miss a day, arrive late, leave early or leave and come back during the day must be approved.

The ideal candidate is available:

  • Week 1 – July 15 – July 19, 9am to 3pm
  • Week 2 – July 22 – July 26, 9am to 3pm
  • Week 3 – July 29 – August 2, 9am to 3pm
  • No camp August 5
  • Week 4 – August 6, 7 & 8, 10am performances for other local camps and groups, 9am to 1pm.
  • Week 4 – August 9 and 10, 7pm performance for the general public, 5pm to 9pm.
  • Has a passion for acting and the theater.
  • Loves working with kids.

Jeremy Kruse, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio, is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series, 2017). The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor, published playwright, award-winning screenwriter, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting, Comedic Improvisation, Sketch Comedy Writing, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama.
