Drinking Through the Decades – A Cocktail-Infused Series

Join us and our friend Sonja Kassebaum, one of the founders of North Shore Distillery (and an avid cocktail nerd), for a spirited discussion of the history of cocktails over the last 150 years. Each month, we’ll explore, discuss and sample what people were drinking during a specific period of time, starting with the birth of the cocktail in the mid 1800’s. We’ll incorporate some local history along the way where we can find it. Also, there are some interesting stories in the history of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff related to cocktails, spirits and Prohibition.
Did you know that the cocktail is a distinctly American invention, and that many of the tools, techniques and methods used by bartenders today were developed by American barmen in the mid to late 1800’s and beyond? Learn more about these inventors, and the drinks they popularized throughout history.
Class #3, May 1, 2018 – Prohibition and its Aftermath – 1920s – 1940s
We’ll talk about what people were drinking during the Roaring 20s, and what they drank during the Great Depression, both here in the US and abroad, where drinking was still legal. We’ll also discuss the birth of the Moscow Mule, one of the most popular drinks today, which was invented in the 1930s.

Class Refund and Cancellation Policy: Refunds will only be given up to one week prior to the first week of class of any session. (The refund period for some classes, which require advanced reservations or purchase of materials, may be more limited.) Cancellations will incur a $5 handling fee for programs costing under $100 and a 10% handling fee for programs with fees of $100 or more. If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified, and a full refund will be given.
