Theater Production Manager


The John & Nancy Hughes Theater at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest, IL is a newly renovated 300-seat theater with professional sound, lighting, and digital cinema technology. The multi-purpose theater produces film, theater, symphonic and chamber music, dance, touring events, and lectures.

Principle Duties:

  • Manage all theater productions
  • Operate lighting, sound, film, and video equipment
  • Analyze and evaluate the need for technical support
  • Plan, develop, and schedule technical support
  • Hire and train paid technical staff when necessary
  • Maintain inventory and order specialized supplies
  • Troubleshoot complex technical problems
  • Create annual and project budgets
  • Invoice and archive production equipment and labor costs
  • Advise external production managers, lighting, and sound designers on the technical specifications and usage of stage and technical equipment. Supervise the implementation of approved technical designs.
  • Supervise and assist when necessary with set and stage construction and management


  • Time management skills with the ability to work under pressure while managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Advanced knowledge of sound and lighting equipment and software
  • Basic knowledge of stage construction
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Quick learner
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50lbs alone or with assistance
  • Demonstrable experience managing operations in multi-purpose theater
  • Knowledge and experience with digital cinema
  • Excellent collaborative skills with strong sense of personal responsibility and ability to build positive relationships

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in theater production, recording technology, lighting, or equivalent degree or experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in production
